Matilde Montoya (1859–1938) was the first woman in Mexico to earn a medical degree. At a time when women faced many restrictions in accessing higher education, she encountered numerous obstacles in her pursuit of a medical career. However, with the support of President Porfirio Díaz, she was able to enroll in the School of Medicine of Mexico and, in 1887, became the first Mexican woman to earn the title of Doctor of Medicine. Her struggle paved the way for more women to enter the medical profession in the country.
