It was wonderful to be back at Key Assets this week for the final day of Mental Health First Aid Australia training with foster carers and social workers.

Today's focus was on recognising and responding to some of the more complex mental health challenges people may experience, including anxiety disorders, psychosis, and substance use disorders. We explored how to recognise the signs and symptoms, have supportive conversations, and connect people with appropriate professional help.

Participants shared that they now feel more confident initiating supportive conversations, and understanding how and where to refer individuals for appropriate professional support when needed.

This is lived experience for many participants, so I want to thank everyone who participated so openly and respectfully over the two days. Your willingness to learn, share experiences, ask questions, and strengthen your ability to support others helps create safer, healthier, and more connected communities.

I spent a few days in May in Mount Isa delivering Child Safe training as part of the rollout of a tailored Child Safe Framework and Policy Suite I recently developed for a consortium of Queensland councils through ChildSafe Australia.

It was fantastic to bring together representatives from Mount Isa City Council, Cloncurry Shire Council, Etheridge Shire Council, Flinders Shire Council, Etheridge Shire Council, McKinlay Shire Council, Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire Council and other participating councils to strengthen their understanding of child-safe cultures, safeguarding responsibilities and practical policy implementation.

Developing policies is only one part of the journey. Real change happens when people understand the purpose behind them and have the confidence to put them into practice. It was a privilege to support these councils as they continue building safer environments for children and young people across regional and remote Queensland.

Last week foster carers and social workers from Key Assets embarked on day 1 of the Mental Health First Aid Course. Mental health first aid is about recognising when someone may be struggling and responding with support, empathy, and care. đź’›

Creating mentally healthy spaces starts with building awareness and reducing stigma around mental health.

When people feel confident having supportive conversations, it can encourage early intervention and help individuals feel safer when reaching out for support.

Mental health first aid training can also assist workplaces recognise signs of stress, anxiety, burnout, and other mental health challenges while providing practical strategies for responding appropriately and referring to professional support when needed.

Supportive and psychologically safe communities and workplaces benefit everyone by strengthening connection, communication, and overall wellbeing.

Recently, I had the opportunity to facilitate workplace resilience, wellbeing, and stress management training for approximately 180 support staff from Lutheran Disability Services.

Together, we explored practical strategies for managing workplace pressures, building resilience, and prioritising wellbeing while continuing to provide exceptional support to others.

Thank you to everyone who participated and shared so openly throughout fge sessions. I always leave this work inspired by the dedication, compassion, and commitment of those working in the disability sector and the meaningful difference they make in people’s lives every day.

Today I had the opportunity to deliver Child Safety training to a group of participants from a range of industries across South Australia.

The group included both new staff completing their initial training and experienced workers undertaking refresher training, bringing together a wealth of knowledge, perspectives and practical experience from across different sectors and age groups.

Child safety is everyone's responsibility. Training provides an opportunity to strengthen understanding of our legal and ethical obligations, recognise indicators of harm, understand reporting pathways, and build confidence in creating environments where children and young people feel safe, heard and supported.

One of the most valuable aspects of these sessions is the discussion that occurs between participants from different backgrounds. Sharing experiences and practical examples helps bring child safety principles to life and reinforces the important role each person plays in protecting children.

Thank you to all participants for your engagement, contributions and commitment to creating safer environments for children and young people across our communities.

Employee wellbeing is about more than just physical health — it also includes mental, emotional, and social wellbeing. 🌿

A positive and supportive workplace can help employees feel valued, safe, and connected. When organisations prioritise mental health, open communication, and work-life balance, it can reduce stress, improve teamwork, and create a healthier workplace culture overall.

Leaders and workplaces that support wellbeing often see stronger motivation, better collaboration, and happier employees. Even small actions, like checking in with staff, recognising achievements, and encouraging support, can make a meaningful difference.

Creating psychologically safe workplaces benefits both people and organisations. đź’š

Recently, Whole People facilitated an online accredited vocational education unit, focusing on Supporting People through Grief and Loss, for Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care students at Eastern College in Victoria.

The facilitation focused on understanding grief and loss, responding with compassion, and recognising the importance of trauma-informed care when supporting others through difficult experiences.

Students explored ways to create safe and supportive conversations while learning how grief can affect people differently. Also highlighting when additional support may be needed, including recognising signs of complicated grief and understanding the importance of referring individuals to appropriate professional help when concerns around mental health or wellbeing arise.

Creating awareness, empathy, and supportive environments helps build stronger and safer communities for everyone.

Stress does not always look like a breakdown. Sometimes it looks like:
• a young person shutting down or becoming reactive
• a child struggling to regulate emotions
• a staff member becoming short, withdrawn or overwhelmed
• people carrying pressure quietly until it shows up in behaviour, conflict, fatigue or burnout

We are seeing increasing levels of stress across workplaces, schools, sporting clubs and youth environments. The challenge is that many people are trying to “push through” without practical tools to manage what is happening internally.

Good stress management is not about telling people to calm down.
It is about helping people:
• recognise early signs of stress
• understand how stress impacts behaviour and decision making
• build practical regulation strategies
• improve communication under pressure
• create psychologically safer environments for children, young people and teams

Whether you work with youth, lead staff, coach teams or support families, understanding stress responses matters.

Whole People facilitate practical stress management and wellbeing training sessions for organisations, leadership teams, educators, youth services, sporting groups and community organisations. Sessions are designed to be practical, engaging and directly relevant to real-world environments.
Topics can include:
• recognising stress and burnout
• emotional regulation strategies
• stress and behaviour in children and youth
• workplace pressure and team dynamics
• communication under stress
• psychological safety and wellbeing culture
• practical coping strategies people can actually use

If your organisation is looking to strengthen wellbeing, resilience and healthier team culture, please reach out.
