SPOTLIGHT ON STORYTELLER BIRGIT BRECKNELL:

Birgit a research scientist (PhD Eng QUT 2004) and a writer. She has held research and project management positions at QUT, UQ, CSIRO, NICTA, UWS, UNSW and the seL4 Foundation.

Her master degree resulted in her first book Frank and Stein: From Research Scientist to Creative Writer, an option for the limited series and representation at Zero Gravity Management. Birgit’s first novel Arjuna’s Daughter was commended by Mary Jane Skalski, producer of The Station Agent, Mysterious Skin and The Visitor. Her short story Perfect Dolls was shortlisted for [untitled] Issue Eight by Busybird Publishing. She is a member of various writing associations and groups, including the Australian Society for Authors and Writing NSW. Birgit is finalising her novel, Jerusalem, and has been working towards publication with her mentor Lee Kofman for two years. Her Novel Histories blog documents the hilarious finds she makes while researching the past.

Birgit also dabbles in cartoons (The World of Bob and Ducky) and acting (NIDA Actors Studio, 2025-2026). She lives in Sydney with her soul mate, Matthew Brecknell.

Our full day memoir writing workshop with Dr Lee Kofman has sold out but you can catch her at these two Sydney Writers' Festival events:

1. Panel on Sunday 17 May - "After Bondi. Jewish writers and artists on the meaning of community, harmony and grief". Along with poet and singer-songwriter Jessica Chapnik Kahn, musician and writer Simon Tedeschi and journalist Michael Visontay, they will discuss in a thoughtful meditation on violence and its consequences. With host Michaela Kalowski.

2. Panel on Thursday 21 May - "Holding Up the Mirror.
Writers reflect on antisemitism now". Along with Jon Sopel, Michael Visontay, and host Avril Alba, this panel discussion offers a timely and important conversation about antisemitism today. With local and international writers bringing different personal and professional perspectives, the panel will consider the impact of world events, political upheavals and day-to-day realities.
