Florey Primary School is situated in Belconnen in the north of the Australian Capital Territory. Our school includes a preschool campus for four year olds and a primary campus for students aged between five and twelve, with a 2014 enrolment of approximately 509 students across the two campuses. The Florey community is made up of a diverse range of nationalities and backgrounds. The multicultural nature of the school (30% EAL/D students) provides opportunities for interaction amongst students from more than 33 different countries. At Florey, we value cultural diversity and develop differentiated teaching and learning programs which enable all students to feel successful and supported in an inclusive environment. As a community we promote the values of respect, tolerance & inclusion and excellence. Classroom teachers provide targeted programs with explicit instruction. Specialist teachers are employed to teach individual students and differentiated groups. Quality teachers providing quality learning is a key aspect of our schools philosophy. As such, coaching and mentoring, combined with a professional learning community approach to sharing ideas, strategies and resources continues to improve the quality of teacher pedagogy. We are currently implementing the Australian Curriculum for English, mathematics, science, history and geography. An Indonesian language program is offered to students in years 1 – 6. Visual and performing arts and technologies are incorporated into integrated units, with a specialist music teacher for years K-2. Student wellbeing, health and physical education are incorporated into our social skills and BluEarth programs. We also use the First Steps resources to support our literacy program and Writer's Notebook to engage reluctant writers. On site facilities include a large covered assembly area/ basketball court, a recently upgraded Assembly Hall and a new purpose-built learning space dedicated to the teaching of Science and Drama.
