If you want a simple Japanese starter plan that doesnโ€™t take you 5 years to get fluent, do this ๐Ÿ‘‡

1. Kanji recognition (1 month)
Download Anki and make an RTK deck.
Card format: kanji on the front, English meaning on the back.
Youโ€™re not learning to write. Youโ€™re just training your brain so kanji stop looking like squiggles.
Do 15 new cards a day for the whole month.

2. Grammar (on the side)
While youโ€™re doing that, read Tae Kimโ€™s grammar guide a few times.
Just aim to understand the concepts, not โ€œstudyโ€ grammar or force yourself to produce it perfectly.

3. Pick ONE Japanese YouTuber and binge
Find a YouTuber you actually enjoy and stick to that one person.
I recommend ใƒ’ใ‚ซใƒซ (itโ€™ll make things easier later).
Watch as much of their stuff as you can.

4. Passive listening all day
Headphones in whenever you can, even while doing other things.
Itโ€™s a numbers game. More exposure = faster progress.

5. Word cards (after kanji feels easier)
Once youโ€™ve been consistent with RTK and reviews, kanji gets way easier to tell apart.
Then move to word cards.
Get ChatGPT to generate the most common 500 Japanese words with English definitions.
Add 35 new cards a day: Japanese word on the front, English on the back.

If youโ€™re in my Skool (Japanese Immersion Lab), you can just use my premade 1000 word YouTube frequency deck.

6. Sentence mining from ใƒ’ใ‚ซใƒซ
After the 500 words, go to ใƒ’ใ‚ซใƒซโ€™s early videos.
Download the Japanese subtitles.
Keep doing 35 a day, but now make cards from full sentences.
Put a ChatGPT breakdown on the back of each card.

7. Keep immersion high
Keep watching/listening as much as possible (ideally ใƒ’ใ‚ซใƒซ).

8. Start outputting for real
Download HelloTalk and make as many Japanese friends as you can.
All the time you used to spend adding cards, switch it to output.
Prioritise calls by far. Only message if you canโ€™t call.
