Study tip your child can use tonight: retrieval practice. 🧠

Instead of re-reading notes (which feels productive but isn't), try this:

Close the book. Write down everything they can remember about the topic — from scratch, without looking.

Then check. What did they remember? What did they miss? Those gaps are exactly where the studying needs to happen.

This technique — called retrieval practice or active recall — is one of the most evidence-backed study methods in learning science. It works because the act of trying to remember something strengthens the memory far more than passively re-reading it.

Works for any subject. 10–15 minutes. No special materials required.

NSW Selective Schools results are in — and they're raising big questions for families across the state.

This year, more than 16,000 students sat the Selective placement test for around 4,400 places. That's a near 4:1 competition ratio — and it's rising.

What's changed: The NSW Government has been reviewing the Selective system, with new recommendations around how places are allocated, whether the test should remain the sole entry criteria, and what support looks like for students who just miss out.

What it means for your child:
→ If they sat this year and didn't get an offer, they're not alone — and the pathway forward matters more than the outcome
→ If they're preparing for next year, the competition is real but manageable with the right preparation
→ If they received an offer, the real work starts now — Year 7 in a selective school moves fast
