So excited to share that I have just enrolled in this incredible online professional development session — Exploring STEM Through the Noongar Six Seasons with Aboriginal Education Officer Cyril Yarran.
As a Perth-based family day care educator, the Noongar seasonal calendar is already woven into our program — it shapes the way we explore nature, notice change and connect with the land around us. So this feels like such a natural and meaningful next step in deepening that practice.
I am always looking for ways to strengthen my cultural responsiveness and bring richer, more authentic experiences to the children in my care — and learning directly from Cyril Yarran is a privilege I am really looking forward to.
If you are an early childhood educator in WA, this one is absolutely worth your time. It is live on Friday 19 June, 10–11am AWST and also available as a recording. Tickets are just $30. 🗓️

Connecting children to Country. Always learning. Always growing.
STEM Hour: Exploring STEM Through the Noongar Six Seasons - Little Scientists Australia What can the flowering of plants, a shift in the wind, or changes in animals tell us about the arrival of a new season?

Makuru is the coldest and wettest of the six Noongar seasons, traditionally occurring from June to July.
As the rain arrives and the days become cooler, the landscape begins to change. The waterways fill, the earth becomes soft and muddy, and many animals seek shelter from the weather. It is a season of gathering, warmth, and connection.
At Today’s Child Family Day Care, Makuru provides many opportunities for learning through play. We will be exploring weather changes, rain, puddles, shelter, animals, warmth, and the important role water plays in our environment. Through stories, sensory experiences, nature-based learning, and creative play, children will be encouraged to observe the changes happening around them and develop a deeper connection to the world they live in.
The Noongar seasons remind us that nature is always changing and that every season brings new opportunities to learn, discover, and grow. We look forward to exploring the sights, sounds, and experiences of Makuru with the children over the coming weeks. 🌿☔️

Over the weekend, I was lucky enough to enjoy a little adventure and time outdoors.
Here in Western Australia, we had a long weekend, and after a busy stretch of family day care life, it was lovely to slow down, breathe in some fresh air, and spend time recharging.
We stayed in a beautiful 115 year old house, full of character and history — the kind of place that makes you wonder about all the stories it could tell. Around us were rolling hills, quiet creeks, open space and, of course, plenty of cows. It was simple, peaceful and just what was needed.
As adults, we often talk about children needing rest, fresh air, connection, space to explore and time to just be — but we need those things too.
Being surrounded by nature is such a powerful reminder of how important balance is. Walking near the creek, looking out over the hills, watching the cows and stepping away from the usual routine helped refill my cup, so I can come back with more patience, energy, creativity and presence.
These moments also connect closely with what I value in my work with children. Children learn so much through noticing the world around them — the sounds, the animals, the weather, the textures, the little changes in nature. It reminds me why outdoor play, curiosity, calm moments and unhurried exploration are so important in early childhood.
A refreshed educator can create a calmer, more nurturing space — and sometimes a little weekend adventure is exactly what’s needed.
I hope everyone, whether you had a long weekend or a regular one, found a small moment to pause, reconnect, or do something that filled your cup.

💛 This is me — in illustrated form!
I absolutely love this little portrait of my world as a Family Day Care Educator here in Perth, WA. It captures so much of what matters to me — the play, the wonder, the gentle moments, the messy days, and the big hearts that make this work so meaningful.
Warm. Calm. Creative. Practical. Lots of patience — and yes, coffee definitely fuels the kindness! ☕
At the heart of everything I do is a simple belief: play is serious learning. Every day I get to wonder alongside some pretty amazing little people, asking myself “how can I extend their thinking?” — and that never gets old.
Nature is our classroom. Connection is our foundation. And community? It matters more than anything. 🌿
If you’re looking for a warm, homey care environment in Perth where your little one will truly belong — I’d love to chat.
