At First Five Early Learning we celebrate who children are now. We look forward to welcoming you and your child into our family-owned service.

We recognise learning begins from birth, with the first five years the most critical and sensitive for shaping children’s health and wellbeing, learning and development. Our Reservoir service is located on the lands of the Wurundjeri Peoples, of the Woi wurrung language group. We cater for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years. This month we were delighted to welcome the wonderful team from Your Community Health Smile Squad for our annual dental visits with our 3 and 4-year-old Kindergarten children.

As part of this free community health initiative, families were offered dental checks to support their children’s oral health and wellbeing. The Smile Squad team made the experience engaging and positive, helping children feel comfortable and confident during their visit.

Children enjoyed listening to a story, learning about foods that help keep our teeth healthy, and exploring the best ways to brush and care for their teeth. These valuable experiences support children to develop healthy habits that can last a lifetime.

A big thank you to the Your Community Health Smile Squad team for partnering with us and helping to promote healthy smiles in our community!

This week at First Five Early Learning Reservoir, we came together to celebrate National Reconciliation Week through meaningful experiences that encouraged connection, reflection and action ❤️💛🖤💙💚🤍

Our families and community embraced the All In for Reconciliation theme by contributing to an interactive pledge wall, sharing their commitments towards reconciliation and helping create a powerful visual display of collective action.
Casey, our Educational Leader, facilitated a service-wide Acknowledgement of Country, inviting children and educators to connect with Country through the sensory experience of exploring gum leaves—feeling their texture, noticing their scent and observing their unique features. Children also engaged with First Nations stories and perspectives through a video of Aunty Joy Murphy sharing the story of Bunjil the Eagle, and a virtual story time featuring Adam Goodes reading Walk With Us.

A key focus throughout the week was privileging First Nations voices and ensuring our learning experiences were informed by authentic resources created by First Nations people and local Elders.

Our family book nook was also transformed into a special display of First Nations books and resources, providing opportunities for ongoing conversations, learning and connection.

We thank our children, families and educators for being All In for Reconciliation and for continuing the journey of listening, learning and walking together.

NQS: Quality Area 1 – Educational Program and Practice, Element 1.1.2: Child-centred – Each child's current knowledge, strengths, ideas, culture, abilities and interests are the foundation of the program.

First Five Early Learning Reservoir offers families all day and all weather play for children in our indoor and outdoor playgrounds. No matter the weather or time of day children are afforded the choice of all day, outdoor play.

The design of playgrounds matters for children’s development and learning. Key components in the design of playgrounds for young children include fixed equipment, open space, portable equipment, natural or native elements and elements of risk.

Sandpits, slides, forts and swings are examples of fixed equipment which cater to the developmental and play needs of children using the playground. For children, fixed equipment signals that children play here due to familiarity and prior experience with common playground features. Fixed equipment provides repeated opportunity to master skills and becomes the anchor from which children explore the larger playground space and more open-ended play opportunities over time.

Wearing blue, standing together with our community, and helping shine a light on Neurofibromatosis this May 💙💚

Our team proudly wore blue today, to support NF Awareness Month. We are proud to support and recognise the families and children in our service and community who experience, or care for someone who experiences, Neurofibromatosis. We hope to be able to raise funds to support the work of NFA and their advocacy in reducing the complexities of accessing care, treatment, support for children, parents and families.

Together, we’re helping bring conversations, understanding, and support for the thousands of children and families impacted by NF.

Did you know? Neurofibromatosis (NF) affects 1 in 2,500 people worldwide — yet many people have never heard of it. Raising awareness helps drive understanding, support, and research.

Throughout Term 2, children have continued engaging with music teachers Matt and Billie from .minds_ through interactive songs, rhythm exploration, movement, and sensory-based musical activities specifically designed for each age group.

• Language and communication development
• Memory, listening, and concentration skills
• Coordination and physical movement
• Emotional expression and self-confidence
• Social connection and collaborative learning

We value the opportunity to provide meaningful programs that support children’s learning and development through creative, play-based learning experiences

A glimpse of our 2026 Annual Children’s Art Gallery Exhibition titled ‘Celebrating the Special People in Our Lives’ proudly showcasing artwork by children at

🎨🖌️🖼️

To recognise and celebrate Mothers and special people in children’s lives, our Educational Leader, Casey, curated a Children’s Art Gallery in collaboration with educators from each of the children’s programs.

With the support of educators, children were invited to explore their sense of connection with the caregivers in their lives and create an artwork about or for a loved one. The Children’s Art Gallery showcases a range of art mediums including clay, sculptures, collage, paints, and paint markers, threaded beading and mixed media portraits.

The Children’s Art Gallery demonstrates respect for children’s thinking, voices, individual expression, and the arts as a language for young children. In line with our Statement of Philosophy, “we recognise family and community as children’s first and most influential teachers”. The gallery is an extension of home and community, and we have delighted in viewing the children’s expressions of the special people with whom they share their lives.

The Children’s Art Gallery will remain open until Wednesday to ensure all families and children can visit and enjoy the space.

Thank you for joining with children and educators to honor all of the parents and guardians who make a difference in the lives of children here at First Five Early Learning Reservoir

Kindergarten Insect Inquiry 🐛🐝🐞🐜🪲🕷️

Our 4 year old kindergarten children spent time last week sharing with such pride, everything they know and adore about their class pets, Charlie & Rose. Charlie and Rose are the Kindergarten children’s much-loved spiney leaf stick insects.

From gently misting their enclosure each day to refreshing their leaves and watching closely as Rose lays her many tiny eggs, these moments are full of curiosity, care, and wonder.

Back in January, our kindergarten teacher Clair noticed a strong interest in bugs and used this as a meaningful way to enrich children’s transition from 3 to 4 year old kindergarten. From there, a rich inquiry into insects has grown and morphed, with children exploring insect anatomy, life cycles, and collecting data on the different types of insects they discover in our garden and at home. Clair has thoughtfully extended this interest to embed early literacy and numeracy concepts and understandings within, as children illustrate and label insects, collect and record data on findings, sort and categorise insect figures and document their own learning journey.

It’s amazing to see and hear just how much these small creatures have inspired our next generation of entomologists, ecologists, conservationists and scientists 🌿✨

NQS: Quality Area 3 – Physical Environment (3.2.3 Environmentally responsible). This reflects how children are actively learning to care for and respect living things through hands-on, sustainable practices in the classroom and transferring this into their home life.

CSS: Collaborative learning, responsibility, and respect for living things. This video highlights the way children work together, build responsibility, and develop an understanding of the natural world through shared experiences with peers and their teacher.

This week, all children enrolled in our 2026 3 year old Victorian Government Approved funded Kindergarten program received their Kinder Kits!

These kits are designed to be shared and enjoyed as a family, providing rich and meaningful opportunities for continuity of learning between home and Kinder for all children.

Everything inside the Kinder Kits encourages creativity and open-ended play. The backpack folds out to a felt surface that can be secured with the Velcro tabs and used for imaginative play. Inside the Kit you will find objects and ideas to help you support your child to thrive at the kindergarten.

All items in the Kit are carefully chosen to support the following five important learning and development outcomes for children from birth to eight years of age:

🔴 Children have a strong sense of identity
🔵 Children are connected with and contribute to their world
🟢 Children have a strong sense of wellbeing
🟡 Children are confident and involved learners
🟣 Children are effective communicators.
