Paddy cultivation by My Gakidh Village School is an excellent example of Place-Based Education (PBE), where students learn through direct experiences within their local environment and community. By engaging in paddy farming from a very young age, students gain practical knowledge and skills related to agriculture, which is an important part of Bhutanese culture and rural livelihoods.
Through activities such as preparing the field, transplanting seedlings, weeding, irrigating, and harvesting, students learn by doing. These hands-on experiences help them understand the science behind plant growth, environmental conservation, teamwork, responsibility, and the value of hard work. Students also develop a deeper appreciation for farmers and food production.
Paddy cultivation connects classroom learning with real-life situations. It integrates subjects such as Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Value Education while promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Elders and community members can share traditional farming knowledge, strengthening the bond between the school and the community.
By providing such meaningful learning experiences from an early age, My Gakidh Village School helps students become responsible, skilled, and environmentally conscious citizens while preserving local knowledge and traditions for future generations.
