This study explores the innovative application of the ASSURE model for effective integration of Microsoft Teams in remote learning environments, particularly during the pandemic-driven shift to virtual education. By addressing critical instructional design challenges, the paper highlights how strategic media use and tailored content can enhance remote learning outcomes.
This publication is part of Lonaka JoLT Vol. 13 No. 2 (2024).

I had the incredible honour of being invited as a guest speaker during this year's June 16 Commemoration in Topisi. In my speech, which I delivered in my mother tongue, I reflected on a pivotal moment in historyโthe 1976 Soweto Uprising in South Africa. I highlighted the bravery of students who stood up for their rights, sparking a movement that forever changed the course of history not only in South African, but the world as a whole. โ๐ฟToday, South Africa has 12 official languages, including sign languageโan amazing testament to progress and inclusivity!
I also took the opportunity to touch on Botswanaโs own strides in education regarding the introduction of pre-primary education, which is critical in shaping our future generations. Iโve witnessed these positive changes firsthand through my involvement in the Mindset Change project in collaboration with the District Commissionerโs office, through our engagements with communities in different villages across the Palapye District. Pre-primary education is crucial in supporting the broader vision of education for all in Botswana.
Letโs continue working together to uplift our youth and ensure that the dreams of the Soweto Uprising are realized not just in South Africa, but across the entire African continent.

Biopiracy has become a pressing issue in Africa, particularly in countries rich in biodiversity and indigenous knowledge, such as Botswana.
Biopiracy refers to the unauthorized and unethical appropriation of biological resources and traditional knowledge by corporations, often from developed countries, for commercial gain without proper compensation or acknowledgment to the indigenous communities.
Without strong legal protections in place, many foreign entities exploit resources, and patent them as if they were novel discoveries.

In Botswana, this issue is particularly alarming, as the country boasts unique plant species, traditional remedies, and cultural practices that are at risk of being exploited for profit without any benefit flowing back to the local communities. Patenting indigenous knowledge in Botswana is essential for protecting the rights of its people. Without legal mechanisms, local communities remain vulnerable to biopiracy, where their heritage and discoveries are taken without consent. By developing a robust system for intellectual property (IP) rights, Botswana can ensure that indigenous knowledge remains under the control of its rightful owners and that any benefits derived from its use are shared equitably.

At the National Science Week, a speaker knowledgeable in Thobega highlighted how this indigenous practice not only addresses physical injuries but also channels spiritual energy to restore health.
Thobega is a traditional healing practice in Botswana that involves the use of indigenous knowledge and spiritual powers to heal fracturesโwhether in humans or animals. This practice taps into ancestral wisdom, where spiritual healers, often revered in their communities, use specific rituals, herbal remedies, and spiritual interventions to mend broken bones and other types of fractures. Unlike conventional medical treatments, Thobega integrates the spiritual dimensions of healing. This illustrates the deep cultural significance and effectiveness of Thobega in Botswanaโs traditional healthcare system. The speaker emphasized how this practice has been pass-on through generations and continues to serve communities where access to modern medical facilities may be limited.
Through a combination of international advocacy and strong national legislation, Botswana can not only protect its rich cultural heritage but also ensure that it benefits from the global demand for natural resources and traditional wisdom.

I was honored to be invited to give a keynote address during the Month of Prayer at the Palapye main kgotla on the 6th of September 2024, under the theme: "Developing a Transformative Mindset."
During my address, I highlighted the critical role of the church in fostering a transformative mindset within our communities. We explored how faith, prayer, and collective action can inspire positive change and build resilient individuals who are committed to uplifting one another.
It was a wonderful opportunity to engage with community leaders, pastors, and congregants as we discussed how the church can be a powerful catalyst for transformation, driving us towards a brighter and more hopeful future. ๐๏ธ
Thank you to everyone who participated in this important event. Let us continue to pray, unite, and transform our mindsets for the betterment of our society. ๐๐ฝ
