Since launching in 2022, 988 has transformed access to support across the United States. More people are reaching out for help and more lives are being saved.

But a lifeline is only as strong as the conversations happening within it.

Research shows callers supported by ASIST-trained crisis counselors are more likely to experience reduced depression and reduced thoughts of su***de.

That’s because ***dePrevention isn’t just about answering the phone. It’s about knowing how to recognize su***de may be the reason for the call, listen with purpose, explore safety and connections to hope, and then, help someone find a path forward.

As #988 continues to grow, training remains a critical part of helping people stay safe when it matters most.

What does ***dePrevention look like inside a military organization?

A 2025 evaluation of the U.S. Coast Guard found that safeTALK helped strengthen su***de safety through peer-based training, cultural relevance and practical intervention skills.

39 USCG personnel became LivingWorks safeTALK Trainers – expanding su***de prevention capacity across teams and communities.

Participants reported greater confidence recognizing signs someone may be struggling with thoughts of su***de, starting conversations and responding in real-world moments where stigma can still impact help-seeking.

And the impact lasts. Learners reported that skills and intervention confidence were retained - helping create stronger, su***de-safer teams.

Su***de prevention is more than awareness.

It’s readiness. Culture. Connection.
