The firefighter turnout jacket, one of the most important pieces of personal protective equipment on the fireground! πŸ§‘β€πŸš’

Modern turnout jackets are made up of three main layers:

πŸ”₯ 1. Outer Shell – Protects against flames, heat, cuts, and abrasion.

πŸ’§ 2. Moisture Barrier – Helps keep water, blood, chemicals, and other contaminants from reaching the firefighter.

πŸ§₯ 3. Thermal Liner – Provides insulation and helps slow heat transfer to the body.

The turnout jacket has evolved significantly over the years. Early firefighters often fought fires wearing wool coats, rubber rain gear, and little protection from heat. Advances in materials and safety standards have led to the modern turnout jacket, which provides far greater protection against the hazards firefighters face today.

Together, these layers work as a system to protect firefighters from many of the dangers encountered on emergency scenes. While turnout gear provides critical protection, it is designed to reduce risk, not eliminate it. Prolonged exposure to heat can still cause burns and heat stress.

RIVER SAFETY ALERT ⚠️

More water is on its way from Gardiner Dam, and the South Saskatchewan River is expected to rise significantly over the coming days.

River flows are currently around 240 mΒ³/s but are expected to increase to approximately 700 mΒ³/s starting Sunday, causing the river to rise by roughly 60 cm (2 feet).

While flooding is not expected, the increased flow will create faster currents, stronger undertows, and more dangerous conditions on and around the river.

Today marks 46 years since the tragic Queen’s Hotel fire in downtown Saskatoon on May 31, 1980.

On that day, Local 80 members Victor and Dennis made the ultimate sacrifice while serving and protecting their community. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

As we remember their lives and honour their legacy, we also recognize the profound impact they continue to have on the firefighting community and the citizens they served.

We will never forget πŸ•ŠοΈ
