RGU SoCET is proud to celebrate women in engineering this .
As we count down, we will spotlight our inspiring women PhD researchers each day and we’re delighted to celebrate the brilliant women engineers shaping the future.
Day 1: Meet Harini Sampath Kumar
PhD Researcher
Harini’s research explores groundbreaking ultrasound-driven microbubble imaging to detect early signs of oral cancer, a non-invasive approach that could save lives through earlier diagnosis.
Driven by a passion where imagination meets impact, she uses engineering to create solutions that improve patient outcomes.
Her advice to girls considering engineering? Stay curious, trust your voice, and embrace complex challenges because engineering is about empathy and shaping a healthier, safer world.

IMechE and RGU Host Lecture on Powering the AI Economy
On 20th May, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Aberdeen Area, in collaboration with the Robert Gordon University School of Computing, Engineering and Technology, hosted a thought-provoking technical lecture examining one of the defining engineering challenges of the artificial intelligence era: how to power the rapidly growing AI economy.
The lecture, “Apollo: Powering the AI Economy – Where Will Tomorrow’s Data Centres Get Their Energy?”, was delivered by Roy Stenhouse, Head of Built Environment at Apollo.
Bringing together students, academics, engineers, and industry professionals, the event explored the increasing energy demands associated with artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and large-scale digital infrastructure. Discussions focused on the growing pressure facing UK electricity networks, alongside the engineering solutions required to support reliable, resilient, and lower-carbon energy systems for future data centres.
Drawing on practical industry experience and real-world case studies, Roy Stenhouse examined how integrated gas and electricity systems, local generation, hydrogen technologies, and emerging low-carbon pathways could help address future infrastructure demands while supporting national decarbonisation goals.
The lecture also highlighted the critical role engineers will play in enabling the next phase of digital transformation and ensuring that future infrastructure development remains both technically viable and environmentally sustainable.
Hosted at the Sir Ian Wood Building, the event formed part of ongoing collaboration between Robert Gordon University and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers to strengthen links between academia and industry while exposing students and professionals to current engineering challenges and future technologies.
The event was organised by Dr Chika Judith Abolle-Okoyeagu, Associate Professor and Head of Postgraduate Taught Studies at Robert Gordon University, in collaboration with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Aberdeen Area.
The organisers extend their thanks to Roy Stenhouse and Apollo for contributing to an engaging and insightful evening of discussion on the future of energy and digital infrastructure.

Team impROVise from Keith Grammar School won the Scottish and European MATE ROV Regional Competition held at Robert Gordon University. Their dedication, innovation, and teamwork earned them the victory, and now they’re heading to the MATE ROV World Championship in St. John’s, Canada this June!
The MATE ROV competition challenges young engineers to design and present a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), built entirely from scratch. Team impROVise stood out not just for their technical expertise, but also for their resilience in overcoming challenges throughout the competition.
As they prepare for the World Championship, Team impROVise is now turning to the community for support. To help get them to Canada and represent Scotland and Europe on the global stage, they are raising funds for travel and logistics.
How can you help?
If you’re able to, please consider donating or sharing their fundraising campaign to help them reach their goal. Every bit counts!

Statement and appeal from our successful and aspirational ROV Team (Young Engineers.)
On the 15th of April, 2026, impROVise, Keith Grammar School’s ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) team took part in the MATE (Marine Advanced Technology Education) competition.
We proceeded to win, which has granted us the privilege of attending the engineering competition’s international final in St. John’s, Canada.
The competition requires us to structure ourselves as a company, making us give a presentation and product demos of a vehicle we built entirely from scratch.
As a team, we have faced many challenges, both before the event and during, but these difficulties have been quickly overcome. As our company tagline says: we are constantly working well under pressure. The competition from the other teams was fierce, adding even more to our drive for success.
We are thrilled to have the brilliant opportunity to represent not only ourselves, KGS and Moray, but also Scotland and even Europe on an international level at the stage we compete at. We, at impROVise, would like to extend the deepest of thanks to our local community and our sponsors for the fantastic level of support for our project.
We now move on to starting our fundraising drive. We would really appreciate if you could share this link with your network to help us reach our fundraising goal and get the whole team out to Canada - https://gofund.me/211ec66c7
Thank you
