🌟 STEM Inspiration at The Big Bang Fair! 🌟

Our Year 7 pupils had an incredible day at The Big Bang Fair at Birmingham’s NEC, exploring hands‑on science, engineering and technology, and discovering exciting future career pathways.

52 of our Pupil Premium students joined thousands of young people diving into the world of STEM through live shows, interactive exhibits and real‑world demonstrations.

A highlight of the day was meeting representatives from National Highways, where pupils learned about careers in engineering, digital technology and environmental sustainability.

The day helped pupils build key skills, including communication, teamwork and problem‑solving, and staff were incredibly proud of their maturity and enthusiasm.

🌄 Bronze DofE Qualifying Expedition = complete!

After months of prep, training and determination, our Bronze DofE students headed out for their Qualifying Expedition — and they absolutely rose to the challenge.

Yes, they mastered the classic DofE essentials like map reading, navigation and campcraft… but this expedition also came with a twist 👀

Alongside cooking on stoves and navigating their routes, teams were challenged to build a working bridge and create a full “Flintstones‑style” car out of poles and ropes. Safe to say, creativity and teamwork were put to the test!

DofE Manager Mr Broughton said it was the moment all their hard work came together.

“Assessors were incredibly impressed with the determination, positive attitude and teamwork shown by all participants,” he added.

From Semaphore and Morse code to campsite cooking and problem‑solving, students showed real resilience and independence throughout the weekend.

A huge well done to everyone involved - completing the Qualifying Expedition is a big milestone in the Bronze Award journey, and you’ve earned it 👏💛

We recently worked with a fantastic UK charity who are committed to improving lives through STEM education.

Making engineering accessible to students from non-traditional backgrounds is crucial if we are going to foster innovation and bridge the diversity gap. It’s something we are passionate about here at Erdington Academy and we couldn’t do it without our community partners. visited us recently to put on a fantastic workshop – focused on real-world applications and hands-on experiential learning. The aeroplane challenge saw them design, build and flight‑test their very own model aircraft.

Our young people also got to meet role models in these industries too. Not only from , but also from Truflo Marine – a local and major name in naval engineering – who funded this event. Thank you for your generosity.

CNC Machinist Apprentice – Find an apprenticeship – GOV.UK We’ve introduced a new way to find and apply for an apprenticeship in England.

Erdington Academy students have truly served up something special 🌸🫖

Our Gardening Club has created a full afternoon‑tea‑themed wheelbarrow for this year’s BBC Gardeners’ World Live, complete with chamomile, mint, lemon, lemongrass, strawberries, borage, marigolds and pansies, all grown from seed by students in Years 7–10.

Guided by Assistant Principal Mr Halstead, these young gardeners have spent two years growing their skills, confidence and teamwork.

Their creation will be on display at the NEC for judging, alongside schools from across the region later this week
