🗣 Tita - auntie

🗣 TEE-ta

The Literal Relative (Aunt) for the sister or sister-in-law of your mother or father.

In Filipino culture, it is considered rude to call older women by their first names. Because of this, “Tita” is used as a polite title for women who are roughly your parents’ age, even if you aren’t related

🗣 Bilas - Co-sibling-in-law / Brother/Sister-in-law

🗣 BEE-las

Refers to the husband of your sister-in-law or the wife of your brother-in-law.

The Connection: You and your bilas are married to a pair of siblings.

There is no English equivalent you would usually just call them your “Brother-in-law” or “Sister-in-law

🗣 Balae - child-in-laws parents

🗣 Ba- la-EH

English does not have a direct word for this relationship, so it is often translated using descriptive terms like Co-parents-in-law or just in-laws

The Relationship Explained - If your child marries someone, that person’s parents are your balae.

In Filipino culture, this term is used not just to define a relationship, but as a title of respect when addressing them directly e.g., “Kumusta, Balae?”

🗣 Manugang

🗣 Ma-nu-gang

It covers everyone—it’s the gender-fluid term for children-in-law. When we want to be specific, we just add a descriptor:
• Manugang na babae for your daughter-in-law 💜
• Manugang na lalaki for your son-in-law 💙
