Students at the university of Manchester have occupied a campus building!
Their demands are:
1. A rent rebate for 30% of students living in halls this semester.
2. Increase elections and student representation in across the university structures.
3. A cash rebate of £1,500 for all UoM students.
4. An end to police controls on the fallowfield campus with immediate effect.
5. No compulsory redundancies for staff, including those in the library whose jobs are currently in scope.
6. No punishment to occupiers and a continued guarantee of no punishment to rent strikers.

Today we attended weekly street stall in Stratford, to hand out information and help out in preparation for our upcoming joint action to support the residents of Brimstone House

Students Not Consumers exists to fight back against the growing costs of education being forced upon us as a collective mass, and UCL’s plans for the Olympic Park area shows a clear case of our higher education system valuing profit over human lives and communities. The almost decade-long campaign for social housing is continuously disregarded by Newham council, who are still pushing public consultations for their plans on how to use the Carpenter’s Estate with the assertion that it will be demolished. Currently under construction nearby is Newham’s flagship “cultural and education centre” that includes new buildings and luxury accommodation for UCL’s Fashion School, which is certain to interest property developers in the Carpenter’s Estate. Despite vague claims of “genuinely affordable” homes being involved in both projects, previous Olympic Park developments with similar claims have both priced out those from lower socio-economic backgrounds with amenities geared towards wealthy middle class gentrifiers, and attempted to physically separate social renters from their neighbours (by floor or building).

We cannot expect to live in a country where equitable access to education is treated as a human right when children from poorer backgrounds are placed into inhospitable conditions, conditions supported by the institutions they are expected to aspire to. Getting an education should not necessitate involving yourself in gentrification and social cleansing, and UCL should not support the actions of Newham Council in destroying communities to make way for what they consider to be a better class of resident. Students are not your pawns, and our communities are not your castles!!!!

WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO PROTEST - it is the cornerstone of democracy, and how radical change is achieved in society.

In light of what happened recently in Bristol it's important to know your rights as a protester and what to do in case you get arrested. So students and consumers have compiled some advice on what to do if you are faced with arrest at a protest.
while you're getting arrested it’s important you have a witness who can ensure the officer arresting you is acting lawfully, and can help take down as much information on your arrest as possible. In light of recent events, we want to make clear that our anti-capitalism is also anti-racist and anti-misogyny. All women and BAME people must be allowed to feel safe, and it is all of our duty to facilitate this and fight for a free and equal society. The events of last night, where police officers responded to a memorial of Sarah Everard who was murdered by one of their own only a few days ago with further violence, shone a light on the police as an oppressive tool of this fascist state. Upholding racism, sexism, and misogyny - and criminalising the human right to protest. The Police Crackdown Bill, paired with a manipulation of COVID-19 laws, will only give them further tools to enforce this ideology.

Stand in solidarity with Palestinian students resisting occupation and apartheid.

Once arrested, Palestinian students are routinely subjected to torture under interrogation — subjected to stress positions and stretched out over chairs, suspended from walls and forced to stand on tiptoe, deprived of sleep, cuffed and pressured on injured limbs, and beaten.

Palestinian students may be sent to administrative detention — imprisonment without charge or trial, indefinitely renewable in six-month periods. Palestinians routinely spend years jailed with no charges, no trial and no real challenge to the deprivation of their rights. They may be brought before Israeli military courts, which convict over 99% of the Palestinians charged there.

The targeting Palestinian students is an attack on Palestinian futures. It is a systematic attempt to undermine the capacity of young Palestinians to organize with one another for a liberated future for their people: One free of colonization, apartheid and occupation.
