"Letter to Self" is a collaborative community project between Molly Daniel from Love to Learn & Stella Gelardi Malfilare from the Royal College of Art.
Love to Learn is a project of The Katherine Low Settlement in Battersea (http://love-to-learn.org.uk/) We work with children & young people from refugee families offering educational support. Stella Gelardi Malfilare is a visual communicator currently studying at the RCA. In an age of smart phone communication and less tactile interaction between friends and family, the children will be given anal
ogue material to each create a Zine under the theme of Family, Friendship and their day to day life. What do they think a good friend is? What is their favorite pizza? Do they have a favorite jumper? What is their favorite memory with their friends or family? We have chosen to make Zines as they are very informal, creative and individual platform to work with & they also encourage students to be more hands on and involved in the design process. The students will be given disposable cameras & journals. They will be encouraged to bring objects from home, that they cherish or thing they have found, that caught their eye in order to show them the value of ordinary objects. We hope to create a portrait of a time in their lives for their future selves, showing them that everything they do and make can be of value. The goal is to exhibit the work at The Royal College of Art, with the intent to break down the boundaries and preconceptions held of the art world and elite education institutions. The students will be able to sell their zines to the public, giving them a sense of value and also the opportunity to raise money for a summer trip!
