Hi folks,
I hope you, your family and friends are doing well at the moment. In the most uplifting news for several months, the Imperial SEG is excited to announce that for the very first time we are selling some premium SEG-embroidered stash!
Yes, we are opening up our personalised Patagonia fleece run to everyone (current students and grads too) - and this time we are also going to cement our status as having the best society merch at Imperial with some bespoke Osprey/Patagonia daypacks! All merch will come branded with the delightful Imperial SEG logo (see photo inset of Patagonia 1/4 Zip Fleece in Navy) and we will be selling everything at cost price - at corporate rates too (40% off retail price). This stash really is a steal.
Prices:
Men's/Women's Patagonia 1/4 Zip Fleece £56
Men's/Women's Patagonia Full Zip Fleece £62
Osprey Talon 22L Daypack £73.50
Osprey Skarab 22L Daypack £56
Patagonia Refugio 28L Daypack £56
You may be thinking, "bloody heck, that's more than usual society stash?!" and yes, it is. But this is proper, functional field gear that you will actually want to wear/use well into the future and will last a long time (not to mention it actually looks rather neat imo). Given that the Australia trip has sadly been postponed until 2021, we are glad we can offer this merch run to everyone.
With regards to colour options, I will post links to the UK Patagonia and Osprey product pages in the comments where all the different colours and pictures are listed. If you want to make an order or have any questions, feel free to message me or email the [email protected] account. Remember to include the size and colour you want. Payments will be organised at a later date. We plan to make the order on Monday lunchtime, so please respond before then!
Cheers,
Dan

Dear all,
We have a very exciting opportunity for three Imperial students to attend a Leapfrog Geo Fundamentals course at the end of March. Leapfrog is one of the leading geological modeling software packages and is used extensively within the mining sector (more here: https://www.leapfrog3d.com/industry-solutions).
The course will be at the RSM from Tuesday 24th March to Friday 27th March, from 9am to 5pm each day. The course is FREE for the selected students (usually 1,200 euros) and is a fantastic opportunity to add some extra-curricular clout to your CV, especially if you are considering a career in the mining industry.
To register interest please email [email protected], if we are over-subscribed we shall run a ballot.
Cheers,
Dan

Hi everyone,
We just got a very exciting email from our friends at the SEG Student Chapter in Freiberg, Germany. Please see an overview and flyer below:
**********
Following the very successful European Exploration Geochemistry Boot Camp 2019, organised by the SEG Student Chapter Freiberg and held by Benedikt Steiner, we proudly announce the next event for the coming year:
European Exploration Targeting Boot Camp 2020
Again as a cooperation between the SEG-SC-Freiberg and Benedikt Steiner (Camborne School of Mines, XPLORE GLOBAL Ltd.).
The European Exploration Targeting Boot Camp 2020 will consist of two parts:
- A Short Course from 1st to 2nd March 2020 on “Targeting of orogenic gold deposits in the Central Lapland Greenstone Belt, Finland“, held in Freiberg, Germany
- And a practical field workshop of one week in the Central Lapland Greenstone Belt in Finland from 28th of May – 3rd of June 2020.
Both events can be attended independently of each other. However, participants of the Short Course will be preferred when registering for the practical part. Like last year, the maximum number of students for the fieldcamp is limited to 20!
**********
If you are interested in either or both of these events please do email us at [email protected] and I can send you more details. This will also enable people who want to go to organise logistics together.
Doing a quick Google, I would estimate the total all-in student price for the workshop in Freiberg to be ~ £120 and the field trip to Finland to be ~ £550, so ~ £700 for both. Unfortunately, Imperial SEG is not in a position to subsidise this course, but of course, this will look epic on your CV if you want to get into mineral exploration!
Cheers,
Dan Keogh

The Imperial SEG Student Chapter is happy to announce that our first talk of the year will be tomorrow at 5PM in room 1.51, delivered by Mark Davis, former exploration geo and now mining consultant.
The talk will discuss how mining is a fundamental part of the global economy, with a particular focus on the advantages and pitfalls of economic growth fuelled by mining in Africa. Mark will also discuss how the transition to more sustainable methods will shape the future of the mining industry.
A myriad of refreshments have been ordered and this promises to be a great event to kickstart our annual lecture series. Look forward to seeing you there!

A couple of the other UK SEG chapters are running local workshops and weekend field trips in the near future - check them out and get involved! Any questions please message us or use the contacts on the flyers.

After a couple of teething problems the 2019 trip is well underway. A brief visit to Cerro Lindo Cu-Zn-Pb high up in the Andes, a tour of Pisco Sn smelter yesterday and a double-header today; touring both Plenge's metallurgy lab and the well-run Río Seco Mn processing plant. We'll head up to Uchucchacua tomorrow to see the Río Seco ore being mined.
03/09/2019
A joint symposium with the PUCP SEG chapter at the Sociedad Geológica del Perú to kick off our Peruvian field excursion. Rumour has it this is the first time Imperial ESE undergraduates have visited South America as an organised group - onwards to Cerro Lindo Cu-Zn-Pb VHMS and then the Pisco Sn smelter tomorrow.
