STEM Dorado, in partnership with VaxHub UCL, delivered an immersive vaccine science workshop for 30 primary school pupils from 13 schools across London.
Hosted by VaxHub at University College London, the workshop introduced pupils in Years 3–6 to the science behind vaccines, including how they are developed, tested, and manufactured. Through hands-on experiments and interactive sessions led by scientists, pupils explored vaccine-making.
A tour of the downstream processing facility at the Department of Biochemical Engineering in UCL gave participants rare insight into real-world vaccine manufacturing. Pupils observed advanced robotic handling systems and state-of-the-art production facilities, offering a glimpse into how scientific research translates into public health impact.
The event aimed to inspire the next generation of scientists by providing early exposure to cutting-edge research environments and meaningful engagement with scientific professionals.

We are launching an outstanding, curriculum oriented science learning experience for years 7-9.
An enrichment course for KS3 cell biology: The workshop will be led by UCL scientists with over 15 years of research and teaching experience in cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, and biotechnology.
It will cover all key aspects of the KS3 cell biology curriculum in depth through engaging presentations and discussions, individual and group hands-on experiments and assessments to reinforce understanding. Students will take part in practical activities on: microscopy, diffusion, osmosis and additional interactive and fun learning activities.
During the lunch break, they will have an opportunity to chat informally with a cell biologist from the University of Oxford (who is also the author of the Cell Stories series in our STEM Dorado Science Magazine.)
Real images and videos from laboratory experiments, including cells, subcellular organelles, and cellular transport processes — will be shared helping students connect school science to real-world research.
Closer to the date, we will send a detailed programme outline to all participating students. They will also receive study and practice materials to take home.
