BEHIND-THE-SCENES

Hangeul Calligraphy London recently had a calligraphy event at the British museum titled Korean Calligraphy Session with Hangeul Calligraphy London.

During the session, our close friend and photographer Inga Marchuk kindly captured these moments for us. These images offer scenes from the event and behind-the-scenes, and because they were taken with such love, you can feel the warmth in every frame.

In the background, Calligrapher Kilchan Lee created two A1 sized artworks featuring the preface to Hunminjeongeum, written in the Panbon chae style.

Mr Kilchan titled this piece Hangeul Sarang, meaning Love for Hangeul. The preface was written from right to left reflect the original style of traditional Korean calligraphy. In the open space toward the left, he added Cheon-Ji-In, the dot, the horizontal line, and vertical line – symbols that form the foundation of Hangeul.

Mr Kilchan created two versions of this work, which you can see displayed at the top and the bottom. You will also find additional photographs taken from various directions and angles.

The initial idea of creating A1 sized piece was proposed by the event organiser Minju MJ Song, suggested Hangeul related piece that could be used as a background. We are grateful to Minju MJ Song for initiating this great idea. We also deeply appreciate your dedicated efforts in promoting both the calligraphy event and the special lecture on ‘Why we Write’.

We will continue to update our website and social media channels with the latest images over time. If you have any photos of us from past events, or if you have come across images on other tagged platforms, please feel free to share them with us. We would love to add them into our story or include them as part of our photo archive.

Thank you, and Merry Christmas to you all.

IMO Republic of Korea Reception

27 November 2025 This year’s program showcased the beauty of Korean culture through K-dance, K-food, Korean Calligraphy, and other highlights.
The program also featured a speech by the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, Chun Jae Soo. Minister Chun visited our booth, expressing appreciation for our activities and congratulating guests as they received their personalised bookmark in Korean Calligraphy, which were warmly welcomed.
It was an engaging evening, and we are grateful for the opportunity to return and contribute once again. Here are some moments from the event.

The 2025 Korean Day Festival
Celebrate Korean Language and Culture

19 November 2025 A wonderful day filled with cultural activities, K-pop performances, and shared East Asian arts. Our Korean calligraphy session was a full house, and we loved exploring the beauty of Korean writing with students, scholars, and faculty members.

A special thank you to Dr Cuie Xu for organising and supporting the sessions behind the scenes, ensuring we could be part of this cultural event.

Thank you as well for the thoughtful feedback from students who joined our calligraphy workshop. Here are some of the comments we received. We are grateful once again and see you again soon!
Feedback1 - Such a wonderful experience trying calligraphy with the proper materials and even taking home a keepsake! Loved learning the history and context too. Huge thanks to the amazing teachers.

Feedback 2 - Loved the Korean calligraphy class & performances! The presenters were so kind and helpful, and it was fascinating to learn the history behind Hangeul. The performances were a wonderful way to end the day, and the performers were excellent.

Feedback 3 - First time at the Korean Calligraphy Workshop! Learned how to hold a brush, discovered the story behind Hangeul, and was moved by Mr. Kil Chan Lee’s reenactment of the King Sejong’s preface to the Hunminjeongeum. Ended with a fun souvenir—writing Korean words on our own name tags.

She is a wonderful photographer and did an amazing job capturing this shot, beautifully highlighting both the calligraphy and the elegance of hangeul. Thank you for your beautiful photo!

Did you know that South Korea dedicates an entire day to celebrating its alphabet? Every year on October 9th, the nation comes together to honour Hangul Day—a holiday marking the creation of the Korean script by King Sejong the Great and his scholars nearly six centuries ago.

In 2025, Hangul Day continues to be more than just a commemoration of letters—it’s a vibrant celebration of culture and history. We're bringing together experts to explore the origins, evolution and significance of writing systems, and their role in shaping communication and identity throughout history.

Don't miss our hands-on calligraphy demonstration with Hangeul Calligraphy London) in the Great Court from 17.00–18.00.

Celebrate Hangeul Day at KCCUK

07 October 2025 Greetings from KCCUK!
We were delighted to host a Hangeul Calligraphy Workshop in celebration of Hangeul Day.

During the ice-breaking session, several attendees confidently spoke Korean and shared their cultural experiences of South Korea. In the main session, we explored the origins of Hangeul and practiced writing the Korean alphabet using traditional brushes and ink. Participants learned how to hold the brush and focused on stroke orders of basic consonants and vowels. Each attendee created their own unique Hangeul calligraphy artwork, capturing the essence of this special day.

Thank you for celebrating Hangeul Day at KCCUK!

Happy 30th Anniversary, Millennium Hotel!

17 July 2025 - We had an amazing time at the influencer event hosted by Millennium Hotel London and KGK. The event was filled with talented influencers, delicious Korean cuisine, and a positive energy!
Each influencer received a unique Hangeul calligraphy souvenir, stamped by the artist on bookmarks, fans, and tote bags. The beautiful fans (Thank you Korea Tourism Organization UK), were a huge hit and disappeared within minutes!
It was a day of culture, connection, and unforgettable memories. We couldn't have asked for more. Thank you for having us! Here's to celebrating 30 years and many more to come!

Cambridge Korea Day 2025 at the Cambridge University Library

12 JULY 2025 - Greetings from the Cambridge University Library, where Korean culture unfolded.

Throughout the day, we explored the Hangeul through traditional calligraphy sessions, learning how to hold a brush and follow the correct stroke order. Each participant chose a meaningful word and inscribed it on a bookmark, words like love, joy, and Samulnori, weaving personal stories into every stroke. We hope these bookmarks serve as reminders of your Korea Day.

A heartfelt thank you to for introducing the first Korean translation of the Bible and the moving letter by Kim Ok-kyun, a reformist from the late Joseon period, and to for sharing the memorable quote.
“사람은 책을 만들고, 책은 사람을 만든다.”
(“People make books, and books make people.”)

Our sincere thanks also go to Francesca, Sarah, Stuart, and everyone who worked behind the scenes to support the event and our calligraphy sessions. It was an honour to be part of this special event to celebrate and share Korean culture.

Here are some of the memorable moments from this special day.

RMG Member’s Thames Sailing Barge Weekend - June 2025
We have attended Member’s Badge Sailing weekend. It was an incredible experience to sail across open waters, following the journey from Pin Mill (Suffolk) to Hythe Quay, Maldon.
Over two nights and three days, under the guidance of our Skipper, 1st Mate, Third Hand, and the hosts – Don and Penny, the voyage unfolded. We had time to soak in sunsets, lie on deck, and watch the sails move against the wind and waves.
One of the highlights was a Hangeul calligraphy activity. Each participant chose a meaningful word, which we then wrote on folding fans generously sponsored by Korea Tourism Organization London. Words like Peace, Joy, Adventure, Inspiration, and Friendship were chosen, capturing the spirit of our journey.
The ship itself, built in 1922, is now 103 years old. She has aged with strength and grace, ready to carry many more stories across the waves.
Here are some memories from our voyage.
