The Mirror We Hold Up: How the Way We Treat People Shapes Who They Become 21/04/2026

The way we treat people shapes who they become.

Tom Kitwood was a psychologist who spent his career studying dementia. His most important finding was not about the brain. It was about relationships.

He discovered that the social environment around a person living with dementia either sustains their sense of self — or erodes it. The way we speak to someone, the assumptions we carry, the dignity we extend (or don’t) — all of it becomes the mirror they look into when they can no longer rely on memory to tell them who they are.

This is why person-centred care is not a nice-to-have. It is the foundation of everything.

If you treat someone like a burden, they will feel like a burden.
If you treat someone like a child, they will act like a child.
If you treat someone like a person of worth — that is who they will be.

I have written a full post on this, covering Kitwood’s research, the Pygmalion effect, and the psychology of social suggestion. It ends with a thought I think you will find hard to shake.

The Mirror We Hold Up: How the Way We Treat People Shapes Who They Become The way we treat people does not merely reflect who they are. It actively constructs it. Explore Tom Kitwood's groundbreaking research on personhood, the looking-glass self, and why the mirror we hold up in dementia care matters more than we realise.
