Grethe

Hello, my name is Grethe Mangala Jensen also known as Sandal Sticks Theatre (a name I chose to honour my part Sri Lankan heritage and love of all things sandal wood). Just over a year ago, my friend Suleika Malcolm gifted me some puppets she'd made, and I happily accepted 🙏🏼

I knew I wanted to create a show for the boy puppet, and he became Puck (my favourite character from A Midsummer Night's Dream) - I was also keen to develop a magic show, havig learnt a few tricks of the trade from Chris Mayne's World of Magic
Chris has been very encouraging, and helped me get the magic, performance ready 😊

So, I presented a show straight from my imagination, with lots of bits I love, and it went down really well!
When kids say 'how did she do that?', I take it as a good sign.

A big thank you to All About Kids Festival for inviting Chris and I again.🙏🏼
And Suleika Malcolm - thank you so much for sparking my imagination with your beautiful creation 🙏🏼

T med Alice
Kultur Kongen: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Iscene: 🌟🌟🌟🌟

The dust has had time to settle on T med Alice (T with Alice).

Now back in the UK , I have had time to reflect on a whirl- wind theatrical journey in my hometown, as well as in my dad's home town.

Playing the part of Alice, has been almost symbolic of my own journey, as Alice, the character, returns to the Mad Hatter's Tea (T) Party after many years elsewhere.
She realises, amongst other things, how important it is to find the Twinkle in the T, (the spark which makes life fun and magical), and also, what it's like to look at life through an older, wiser lens!

I'm so very grateful to Sjællands Teater for the opportunity.
Sjællands Teater is officially the biggest regional theatre in Denmark, consisting of three theatre spaces:

Holbæk Teater ( AD - Brian Kristensen)
Slagelse Teater(Ad- Peter Tieme)
Teatret Fair Play ( AD - Robert Parr)

Rob Parr, was a great influence early on in my acting journey, and the time I spent at Fair Play in my teenage years, has very much been an important stepping stone in my professional journey 🙏🏼

Chuffed that Rob cast me as Alice, in such a magical show ✨️

We've had lots of wonderful feedback - my favourite entry in the visitors book has to be this one:

'Det var sygt fedt' ( slang: That was sick awesome!)

I had a wonderful, playful time with my colleagues, Morten Klode (The Mad Hatter), and super technician Nicolai Lorentzen ( in charge of all technical and theatre magic, operated from under the T table, which he also built- sturdy enough for me to walk on!).

Very much a 3-hander show, with a close-knit team - I miss them! However, to get the show to where it was, and to be so lush and delicious, required immense effort, skill and talent from a lot of people, who worked tirelessly to create theatre magic !✨️
