This quietly magnificent view was painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal — better known as Canaletto — and today hangs above the chimneypiece in the Picture Room at Sir John Soane’s Museum.

🏛️ Sir John Soane (1753–1837) was one of the great architects of the Regency era: Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy, designer of the Bank of England and Dulwich Picture Gallery, and a tireless collector of paintings, fragments, models, books and drawings.

In 1833, Soane secured a private Act of Parliament ensuring that his house — and everything within it — would be preserved exactly as arranged at the time of his death, open to the public, free, and held in trust for inspiration and education forever.

This is a gift. We should all visit! 😊
