Singapore to New York is the longest nonstop commercial flight on the planet. It runs nearly 19 hours in the air, crossing 9,500 nautical miles of sky. And oddly enough, it does it without a single economy seat.

Singapore Airlines uses a special version of the Airbus A350-900 called the ULR (Ultra Long Range) for this route. These jets are modified to hold extra fuel and can fly over 20 hours nonstop. But instead of squeezing in 300 passengers, Singapore configures them with just 161 seats: 67 in business, 94 in premium economy. That’s it.

There’s no first class, no standard economy. Why? Because this flight isn’t built for everyone. It’s tailored for business travelers and premium flyers willing to pay for speed, sleep, and nonstop service. The economics wouldn’t work otherwise. A dense cabin means heavier weight and lower margins on a route this long.

Singapore’s strategy is the opposite of Qantas, whose upcoming Project Sunrise A350-1000ULRs will include economy seating. But for now, Singapore’s ultra-long-haul niche is clear: fewer passengers, higher fares, no frills at the back.

SQ21 and SQ23 remain the longest flights in the world, but with Qantas planning longer routes from Sydney, that may not last much longer.
