Hello my lovely women in physics, just a quick shout out for an opportunity to take part in the Women in Physics Open Day.

On the 28th of March (Tuesday) the department will be hosting a Women in Physics Open Day where GCSE and A level students will be invited to visit Imperial and learn more about the women at Imperial as well as get a flavour of what it's like to be a physicist (see attached image). The day will end with a question and answer session where the students will be able to ask the undergraduates (you) questions about your time at Imperial, and your career path so far.

If you'd like to take part then please get in touch! You can message/comment below.

Trisha Saxena, one of our lovely UGs is doing her thang at the UK Space Design Competition (UKSDC) this weekend!

She was on the winning team last year and got to go to NASA!! How cool is that?! And now she's volunteering at this year's competition. 😃😎💁🏻💃🏻Check out her story here: http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/newsandeventspggrp/imperialcollege/newssummary/news_17-12-2015-16-51-11

Woo! Go Jess Wade! :)

"I’ve done a few outreach events here at Imperial, and one big one I did last September was for 200 girls to come in to campus. We had 18 different workshops in 18 different rooms, and I wrote to places like the Royal Society of Chemistry, Intel and Bletchley Park, who brought an Enigma machine. Everyone came and ran a different workshop, and Cisco sponsored lab coats for all the girls. It was amazing and overwhelming and terrifying all at the same time. It was like if you’re arranging a birthday party or a dinner, and you’re so terrified before that you can’t even think about it happening. I think I got in at 5:00am that day and the event didn’t start till 10. I was just sitting there watching all these vans go by. But the looks on the girls’ faces when they were going home - I just thought, 'This is amazing'." -Jessica Wade, Research Postgraduate, Department of Physics (2/2)

WiP IC loves Jess Wade and all that she does! She's keen about getting more girls into physics and is an exceptional role model. We're so privileged to have Jess in the world - she founded WiP IC and has done so much for Imperial Physics. Let's get those likes for Jess and celebrate her and her achievements today on International Women's Day! Keep doing BRILLIANT things Jess!

"I had a sensationally good physics teacher when I was in secondary school, and I always knew I was going to do physics or chemistry. The frustrating thing about the lack of girls taking physics is I think physics is so much a part of everyone, but girls don’t get taught it in a way that they feel it should be. A lot of what I do in my outreach work is trying to get young girls to realise that they can do physics. It’s not just sitting there, learning equations. We have a lot of fun in physics. I think that you can make anything exciting for young people. They’ve all got backpacks full of electronic devices, and if you can talk to them about the future of those devices and how we’re doing that work in labs in London - we’re going to make them flexible, we’re going to make roll-up TVs - they love that kind of stuff. All young people need to get excited about physics is to see an application in it. That’s not taught on the curriculum, so you have to take it to them." -Jessica Wade, Research Postgraduate, Department of Physics (1/2)
