Today our co-headteachers were invited to Parliament by the BDA to support them as they continue to highlight with MPs why early access to BSL matters for children, families and society.

Our co-headteachers joined other deaf schools and deaf organisations to support the importance of BSL & early language and intervention for all deaf children. Early BSL supports language development, wellbeing, education and future opportunities.

Research by RAND Europe shows that early BSL can return up to £14 for every £1 invested over a child’s lifetime.

Congratulations to our trainee Teacher of the Deaf, Alysha, for completing your placement at Blanche Nevile School! Supported by one of our own Deaf ToDs Ms Donovan, you have had a brilliant impact on our pupils in your four weeks here. It is so important to see Deaf Teachers of the Deaf supporting each other and inspiring the next generation! We wish you all the best in your course and career!

Blanche Nevile School is proud to support the British Deaf Association Sign Language Week! Today we ‘wore it blue’ to spread the message of empowerment and visibility for the Deaf community. The theme this year is “United in Sign”, and we were proud to wave our Deaf flag, a symbol adopted by members of the World Federation of the Deaf from across the globe. Primary students created some beautiful art work on the theme. As the BDA says:

“Every sign learned is an act of allyship. Join us as an ally, learn, share and support us!”

Year 7 enjoyed a sunny visit to London Wildlife Trust at Walthamstow Wetlands yesterday! As part of their science and geography learning, they spotted birds and seasonal changes around the wetlands, and created their own maps of the site. Thanks to the staff for being great guides and making our visit so engaging!

This week Blanche Nevile students have been celebrating National Careers Week! We’ve had some great workshops and presentations from colleges and inspiring deaf professionals, who have told students all about their options and opportunities when they leave school and join the world of work. It’s also been wonderful to have some BN alumni come back to school to tell us how they are getting on in their education journeys! We hope students feel inspired to plan their next steps and achieve their dreams.

Secondary students were very lucky today to have a visit from the London Children's Ballet! We watched their touring show, ‘Ella’s Big Chance’, based on the story Cinderella. Students were so impressed at the skill and storytelling on display by some very talented dancers. Afterwards we could ask some questions to the performers. It was a fantastic afternoon, thank you so much to everyone involved in making this event happen!

The Blanche Nevile Company at Spitalfields Market! Thanks to Young Enterprise our team from secondary were able to spend the day selling the products they chose and created, alongside teams from over 40 other schools. It was an exciting day meeting judges and staff from YE, as well as members of the public, and making some sales! Well done team!
