Happy International Bat Appreciation Day! In the UK, we have 18 species of bats π¦. Bats often get a bad reputation, feared by the public due to folklore and pop culture where they are frequently associated with evil and the supernatural. Here are a few reasons to celebrate bats:
π¦ Seed Dispersal - Bats are responsible for up to 96% of seed dispersal, which promotes biodiversity and helps maintain healthy ecosystems
π¦ Pollination - Several bat species are vital pollinators, they are known to pollinate over 500 plant species! The reason we have crops like bananas and avocados - is thanks to bats π₯
π¦ Pest control - Bats in the UK eat insects such as moths, midges, mosquitoes, and flies. By doing so, they reduce the need for chemical pesticides and make gardens both healthier and more eco-friendly! πΈ
Join us today in celebrating our brilliant bats!

Ava, a Level 1 Animal Care student, helping our keepers weigh and check the goats hooves during husbandry today! π
Overgrown hooves can lead to lameness and discomfort, so it is important to check their hooves as part of a routine health check. This way animal carers can ensure that goats remain comfortable and mobile.
