Boys Basketball, Second Years:
On Tuesday our second year boys basketball team travelled to Dublin for their All Ireland QF playoff series.
The day started with a game vs Ballymakenny College. Our lads put up a great fight in the first half and worked very hard to stay in the game. Unfortunately, our lads couldn’t get into the game to the standard they are capable of and the opposition proved to be too clinical when our lads weren’t performing to the standards they usually do. Balkymakenny went on to win the game comfortably in the end.
In the second game our lads went out to face the host school, and tournament favourites, Nord Anglia. Playing their second game in a row, our lads got off to a great start and lead at the end of both the first and second quarters. It was an epic game with both sides going basket for basket. Heading into the fourth quarter Beara lead by 4 points. The opposition brought a great fight and with 30 seconds left, the game was level. Both teams had opportunities to win it and with 3 seconds left, the game was level and Beara had 2 free throws. Luke Mason stepped up to the line and, as if the pressure wasn’t high enough, he missed his first free throw. With one more shot to win the game he drained the free throw and put us 1 point up. The opposition called a timeout to draw up a play and work a shot. Thanks to some excellent defending, the shot was unsuccessful and Beara took the win.
Unfortunately, given how other results went in other games, the last game's result would have made no difference to our lads' chances of progressing to the semi final stages. They went out and played Kildare town CS, in what was the most entertaining game of the day. The lads all got plenty game time and, with nothing to play for in the game, just went out and enjoyed themselves to finish off their season.
It was a brilliant year for this team who have trained very hard to achieve what they have. They all have an excellent attitude and willingness to learn and improve. This is their second year making this stage of the competition and hopefully they progress even further next year with more training and practice. The lads were complimented for their positive attitudes, general positive behaviour and how they conducted themselves in the hotel and around the host school.
Well done lads

Boys Basketball:
Our first years boys basketball team had a thriller of a day today in Dublin.
The day began with our first game vs Dundalk Grammar. It was a close game throughout and the Beara lads came out deserving winners in the end. This set the tempo for what was going to be a very good day for our lads, getting rid of the nerves and anticipation associated with such a big occasion.
They went out in the second game to play Athy College, who had lost their first game to the hosts. Again, our lads put in an excellent performance against a very strong side to come away with their second win after two games.
This set up an exciting finish with the final game of the day against the host school Terenure College. With both teams having two wins from two games, this was the deciding game for the semi-final spot on offer. It was an excellent first half of basketball, with both teams playing very good basketball considering the fatigue the players were feeling at this stage. It was 18 apiece midway through the third quarter when Terenure took control of the game and took a commanding lead, one our lads unfortunately couldn’t overcome. Terenure College went on to win comfortably in the end and showed the quality their team had to keep going in the final quarter. Our lads were fairly exhausted after an extremely physically demanding day, but can hold their heads high after what was a fantastic day and year for them on the basketball court.
What is very special about this group is that all of these lads played their very first competitive game of basketball only three months ago, with most of them only picking up the skills and rules as we played our first games. Fast forward to this moment and the lads found themselves within 1 game of making an All-Ireland semi-final, playing against three other schools with basketball exposure from a much younger age. This is a true reflection of the hard work, determination and character the lads have shown to improve and develop their skills and tactical awareness over the past number of months. This group are a very resilient and respectful bunch of players, and while they will be very disappointed not to progress, they can be so proud of all they have achieved.
We as a school are extremely proud of them and look forward to acknowledging their achievement to get to this stage and come so close to making the All-Ireland semi-final in school again next week.
Well done lads.
