🌊🦴 A Tiny Fossil With a HUGE Story 🦴🌊

Found along the shores of Donegal Bay, this little fossil is a real piece of Ireland’s ancient past — likely a brachiopod, a marine animal that lived over 300–400 million years ago when Donegal lay beneath warm tropical seas.

The fine ridges you can still see today were once part of the animal’s shell structure. After it died, layers of mud buried the shell, and over millions of years minerals slowly turned it into stone.

It’s amazing to think that something fitting in the palm of your hand could have survived since long before dinosaurs even existed.

At Wildshore Camps we love moments like this — where curiosity, nature, history and adventure all meet on the shoreline. Every beach walk can uncover a new story waiting to be told.

🌊🦴 What is a Mini Ancient Ecosystem? 🦴🌊

Ever wondered what it means when we say a fossil find is a “mini ancient ecosystem”? 👀

It means you’re not just holding one fossil…
👉 you’re holding pieces of a whole prehistoric world 🌍

Millions of years ago, places like Donegal were covered by ocean. In that sea lived:

🌸 Crinoids – like underwater flowers attached to the seabed
🌀 Ammonites – spiral-shelled creatures drifting through the water
🦑 Belemnites – fast-swimming squid-like predators

🌊 How they all fit together

🌿 Crinoids sat on the seafloor catching tiny food
🌀 Ammonites drifted and fed in the water
🦑 Belemnites hunted and swam quickly

👉 Together, they formed a living ecosystem, just like the oceans today

A mini ancient ecosystem is like a snapshot of life from long ago — all found in one place!

At Wildshore Summer Camps, we love helping children explore these real pieces of history and imagine the incredible worlds they came from 💙

🌊🦴 Wildshore Summer Camps – Fossil Finds from Donegal! 🦴🌊

Look at these amazing fossils discovered along the Donegal shoreline 👀
These include:

🌀 An ammonite fossil – an imprint of an ancient spiral-shelled sea creature, related to modern squid and octopus
🦑 A belemnite fragment – the bullet-shaped internal skeleton of another squid-like animal

Both of these creatures lived in the seas around Ireland over 150 million years ago, when Donegal was covered by a warm, shallow ocean 🌍

✨ These real fossils will be on display at our Fossil Table this summer, where our little Fox Cubs 🦊 can:

🌊 Learn about life in prehistoric oceans
🧠 Ask questions and spark curiosity
🙌 Get hands-on with nature and science
