🌍 The Silent Decline of Foreign Languages in Indian Schools Needs Attention
India's education system is evolving, and the National Education Policy (NEP) is playing a significant role in shaping its future. While the emphasis on Indian languages is both welcome and important, there is a growing concern that foreign languages such as French, German, Spanish, and Italian are gradually disappearing from many schools.
As an educator who has spent nearly two decades teaching French, I have seen how language learning can open doors to opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom.
There was a time when proficiency in English helped Indians access global education, employment, and leadership opportunities. Today, we live in an even more interconnected world. International companies operate across multiple countries, global teams collaborate daily, and students increasingly seek educational opportunities beyond national borders.
In such a world, foreign languages are not merely additional subjects. They are valuable skills that help students communicate across cultures, access international opportunities, and develop a truly global outlook.
At the same time, the aspirations of Indian families have changed. More students are exploring higher education opportunities in Europe, Canada, and other parts of the world. Many parents prefer their children to begin learning foreign languages early, allowing them to build proficiency gradually rather than facing the challenge later during demanding professional studies.
This is not a question of choosing between Indian languages and foreign languages. India has always been strongest when it embraces diversity. We can strengthen our Indian languages while continuing to provide meaningful opportunities for students to learn foreign languages.
