A mosque in South London is opening its doors to the wider community during this week's heatwave.

The Muslim Cultural Welfare Association of Sutton MCWAS is inviting anyone in need of relief from the soaring temperatures - Muslim and non-Muslim alike - to make use of its air-conditioned facilities.

In a statement shared on social media, the mosque said:

"As temperatures rise, MCWAS is pleased to open our downstairs space as a cool, comfortable community area for anyone who may benefit from it.

If your home is difficult to keep cool, or if you simply need a quiet place to work, rest, or relax, please feel free to make use of our facilities. Everyone is warmly welcome."

The initiative offers residents a safe and comfortable place to escape the heat, highlighting the mosque's commitment to supporting the local community.

A young Muslim man from Morocco is being praised after risking his own life to rescue a woman who was swept away by strong ocean currents off the coast of Spain. Witnesses said he immediately jumped into the sea without hesitation after seeing the woman struggling in the water. Despite the dangerous conditions, he managed to reach her and guide her back toward a safer part of the shore. This is Maysum Abdullah, the hero teacher who was knifed in a triple stabbing at a high school in Blackley.

Maysum suffered a wound to his neck in the horror incident at Co-op Academy Manchester. 😢

He rushed to protect students as the school was locked down amid reports of a pupil with a knife. The child was quickly 'detained' by staff, school bosses said.

Three people were hurt. A 14-year-old girl suffered injuries to her shoulder; a 14-year-old boy injuries to his ear; and Mr Abdullah injuries to his neck and hand. All are now recovering at home. None of their injuries were deemed to be serious.

A Transport for London worker has helped prevent at least 34 people from taking their own lives.

Rizwan Javed, who works across London’s rail network, has repeatedly stepped in to support people in crisis, helping them get to safety through simple conversations and a willingness to listen.

He received su***de prevention training through the charity Samaritans, where he learned how to recognise the signs that someone may need help. He says many of the life-saving interventions started with something as simple as asking, “Are you okay?”

Rizwan has also used his platform to encourage more open conversations around mental health and break down the stigma surrounding the topic.
