BSN Network / Mumbai | Thu, Apr 28, 2016
NUSI Offshore Training Institute’ (NOTI) is probably the only institute in the World for offshore training to be established by a Seafarers’ Trade Union said Capt. Suresh Kundargi while speaking to BSN in an interview. He informed BSN about the Institute’s faculty, infrastructure, the green initiatives, the courses offered and other aspects of the Institute. NOTI was inaugurated on 6th November 2013. The trust is governed by Seven Honorary Trustees.
1. What were the drivers that led to the establishment of the Institute?
Training for officers and ratings working Offshore was on a smaller scale in India. Though a few institutes conducted some courses, number of seats were less and fees charged were very high.
2. What is unique about NOTI?
‘NUSI Offshore Training Institute’ is an Institute with a Difference. It is probably the only institute in the World of such type to be established by a Seafarers’ Trade Union. The National Union of Seafarers of India also subsidises some courses for ratings. NOTI offers a range of operational and safety training programs. These include Offshore Vessel Anchor Handling and Towing, Vessel Manoeuvring, Dynamic Positioning, Crane Operations, ROV Pilot, Scaffolding, Rigging and Slinging, Banksman, Helicopter Landing, Safe Cargo Handling, Emergency Response, etc.
With accreditations from well-known internationally acclaimed statutory bodies, highly experienced faculty, and full boarding and lodging facilities, NOTI offers the best in offshore Oil and Gas sector training at amazingly competitive rates.
While NUSI was established in co-operation with the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) set up a Welfare Trust called NUSI/ ITF Trust for Indian Seafarers and their families, NOTI.
Need was felt to establish a state-of-the-art institute to provide world class facilities under one roof for officers and ratings. NUSI Offshore Training Institute, I am proud to state, is unique in this field having the only 360 degree view of ship’s Bridge. There are separate Simulators for OSV anchor Handling, Towing, Dynamic Positioning, OSV Engine Room, Offshore Crane Operations, Remotely Operated Vehicle and Multi-Functional Classroom. The arrangement is such that all these can be networked and operated as one vessel, giving the participants a holistic operational experience. There are individual instructor cabins as well as on Unified Instructors’ Control Centre. The entire exercise of a candidate is covered by unobtrusive CCTVs giving video and audio recording for debriefing of candidates and also for employers’ information.
3. Can you tell us about the faculty?
The faculty consists of very experienced OSV officers and instructors. They have over 15 years’ service on OSVs engaged in all operations World over. NOTI has received excellent feedback on knowledge and teaching skills of all of them.
Our faculty for skill enhancement course are also well experienced and hands on teachers. Candidates have expressed the usefulness of the course which has given them the fundamentals of what they were actually doing in practice on board.
4. Please tell us about the infrastructure created for this Institute?
We offer state of the art training facilities with AC class rooms having modern audio visual aids. All Simulator rooms are equipped with audio and video recording facilities which can be transmitted to the Unified Simulation Control Centre (USCC) and replayed in the debriefing room. Separate Library, computer centre, conference room add to the infrastructure. Lodging and boarding with recreation facilities are provided.
5. What about the funding for setting up the institute?
NOTI has been established by NUSI –ITF Trust. The entire infrastructure has been funded and maintained by the NUSI-ITF Trust. NOTI is operated on “NO Profit – No Loss” basis.
6. Has the Institute used green initiatives in its infrastructure?
The surrounding area is very picturesque. It is very pleasant during monsoon. We do everything to maintain the ambience. Natural resources like water, which we get from bore wells is used sparingly. Waste water from RO plant is used for garden. Kitchen waste and Garden waste are converted into compost. Diesel generators and vehicles are maintained pollution free and have been approved by the concerned authorities.
7. Which are the courses that are being run at NOTI? What is unique about these courses?
Besides the courses mentioned in point 2 above, we have custom designed courses for employers and companies as per their specific requirements.
8. What are the benefits for the students undergoing training at NOTI?
NOTI is a World standard training institute dedicated to offshore industry. Nautical Institute has accredited NOTI for Dynamic Positioning courses, making candidates to seek and obtain employment worldwide.
The ambience is ideal for training. Campus surroundings are maintained to provide peaceful atmosphere. Air conditioned accommodation and catering is first class. There is well equipped gym and lounge with TV, table tennis and billiard tables.
9. What is the capacity of students the Institute can cater to?
There is accommodation for 52 candidates at one time.
10. The offshore sector is growing rapidly in India, what is the potential for employment for students attending the course?
I am happy that the offshore industry is growing in India. I am looking forward to this industry growing the world over. This will give major boost to Indian seafarers to get employment and increase the percentage of Indian seafarers in the global maritime sector.
11. Since the Institute is being run on no profit basis, how cost effective it is for students?
Suffice it to say that our fees are lowest in the industry, without compromising on the standards of teaching and equipment.
12. The government has launched ‘Skill India’ initiative, how will it benefit Institute like NOTI?
As mentioned above, we started skill enhancement courses almost as soon as the Prime Minister spoke about them.
13. Would you like to tell us something about yourself and your association with Institute?
I have been associated with NOTI from January 2013, almost from inception. I have seen the infrastructure being readied and the institute being inaugurated by Mr Mitropoulos, former Secretary General of IMO on 6th November 2013.
