This photograph captures the very first A&W Root Beer franchise stand opened by J. Willard Marriott and his wife, Alice Sheets Marriott, in Washington, D.C. in May 1927. This humble nine-seat root beer stand marks the birthplace of the global Marriott hospitality empire.

Looking to quench people's thirst during the muggy Washington, D.C. summers, J. Willard Marriott bought the franchise rights for the area. He is pictured standing on the left outside the storefront.

As winter approached and cold root beer sales slowed, the Marriotts added hot food to the menu—including the "Hot Tamales" and "Chili Con Carne" advertised on the stand's window.

Because of these hot food additions, the business was officially incorporated in 1929 as "Hot Shoppes, Inc." You can see the name The Hot Shoppe painted in cursive script on the windowpane above the counter.

Decades after operating a highly successful chain of Hot Shoppes restaurants and airline catering services, the family opened their very first hotel in Arlington, Virginia in 1957, eventually shifting entirely to global lodging.

This historical photograph captures the interior of a Boeing Model 80 commercial transport aircraft cabin during the late 1920s to early 1930s. The most prominent feature of this photo is the wicker (rattan) passenger seating. In the early eras of commercial aviation, weight management was absolutely critical because aircraft engines had limited horsepower. Wicker was highly favored because it was incredibly lightweight, naturally flexible for basic suspension comfort, and easy to sanitize or replace.

Introduced in 1928 by the Boeing Airplane Company, the Model 80 was a biplane airliner designed to carry 12 passengers in a fully enclosed cabin. It was one of the first domestic U.S. airliners built specifically to prioritize passenger comfort, featuring leather trims, reading lights, and forced-air ventilation.

Unlike modern jetliners, cabins during this era were entirely unpressurized and lacked modern climate control. Aircraft typically flew at low altitudes—usually between 3,000 and 5,000 feet—meaning passengers frequently experienced turbulence, loud engine roar, and shifting cabin temperatures.

Air travel in the late 1920s was an exclusive, high-cost luxury. As shown in the photo, passengers routinely wore their finest formal attire, with men wearing tailored wool suits and ties, and women in cloche hats, heavy winter coats, and elegant scarves.

This iconic photograph captures aviation pioneer and then-Chairman of Air India, J.R.D. Tata, standing alongside the cabin crew on May 4, 1971, celebrating the delivery day of the airline's second Boeing 747-237B.

The Jumbo Jet in the background is registered as VT-EBE and was named "Emperor Shahjehan". It belonged to Air India's luxurious "Emperor" flagship series.

Air India introduced these wide-body 747 aircraft under the grand theme "Your Palace in the Sky". The exterior featured a distinct livery showcasing individual Rajasthani palace arch designs (jharokhas) painted around every passenger window

The flight attendants featured in the photo are dressed in premium, heavily detailed traditional attire. The air hostess descending the steps is outfitted in a Rajputana princess-style lehenga, while the other crew members are adorned in exclusive silk sarees.

J.R.D. Tata took personal, microscopic interest in detailing this fleet. The upper deck housed the legendary Maharaja Lounges, complete with custom Indian tapestries, where guests were served fine dining on real silverware and plates.

Unlike its sister aircraft Emperor Ashoka (which tragically crashed in 1978), Emperor Shahjehan went on to become Air India's longest-serving Boeing 747, remaining a fixture of the international fleet until its retirement in 2000.

This historic photograph depicts Georges Nagelmackers (1845–1905), the prominent Belgian civil engineer, industrialist, and travel entrepreneur.

Founder of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (CIWL), the legendary enterprise responsible for creating and operating the Orient Express luxury train service.

Born into a family of wealthy bankers, Nagelmackers traveled to the United States in the late 1860s where he observed George Pullman's sleeper carriages. Inspired by this concept, he returned to Europe and refined the idea to build an interconnected network of opulent continental sleeper trains. This culminated in the grand launch of the inaugural Orient Express journey from Paris to Constantinople (Istanbul) on October 4, 1883.

This image features a vintage Air-India International information brochure and route map dating back to the late 1940s to early 1950s.

The left side illustrates Air India’s famous Bombay to London flagship route via Cairo and Geneva. This specific routing marks India's very first international commercial flight, which officially took flight on June 8, 1948, using a Lockheed L-749 Constellation aircraft named the Malabar Princess.

The right side highlights the regional route network of the same era, displaying the Bombay - Madras - Colombo flight corridor connecting India and Sri Lanka.

The illustrations prominently feature The Maharaja, Air India’s legendary mascot. Created in 1946 by Bobby Kooka and Umesh Rao, the character is depicted here in his classic playful style—riding a magic carpet across the globe and relaxing on a striped rug.

These collectible fold-out pocket brochures were given directly to passengers as promotional souvenirs and reference material during the early days of global commercial aviation.
