Fractures With Eponyms.

1. Monteggia Fracture Dislocation: Fracture of proximal third of ulna with dialocation of the head of humerus.

2. Galeazzi Fracture Dislocation: The fracture of the distal third of radius with dislocation of the distal radio-ulnar joint.

3. Night-stick Fracture: Isolated fracture of shaft of the ulna sustained while trying to ward off a stick blow.

4. Colles Fracture: This is fracture occuring in adults , at cortico-cancellous junction of the distal end of the radius with dorsal tilt and other displacements.

5. Smith’s Fracture: Fractrue occuring in adults, at the cortico-cancellous junction of the distal end of the radius with ventral tilt and other displacements. (Opposite of Colles)

In next post, we will discuss about Other Fractures With Eponyms.

Fracture Type On the Basis of pattern.

1. Transverse Fracture: The fracture lines are perpendicular to the long axis of the bone. Fracture is caused by bending or tapping force.

2. Oblique Fracture: The fracture line is oblique. Caused by bending force which in addition has a component along the long axis of the bone.

3. Spiral Fracture: the fracture line runs spirally in more than one plane. caused by twisting force.

4. Comminuted Fracture: This is fracture with multiple fragments. Caused by crushing or compression force along the long axis of the bone.

5. Segmental Fracture: There are two fractures in one bone, but at different levels.
A fracture may have a combination of two or more patterns. Example, It may be a comminuted but primarily a transverse fracture.

In next post, we will discuss about Fractures With Eponyms.

Fracture Type On the Basis of Quantum Of Force Causing Fractrue.

1. High Velocity Injury: These are fractures sustained as a result of severe trauma force, as in traffic accidents. Accompanied by severe soft tissue injury, extensive devascularisation of fracture ends. These are often unstable and slow to heal.

2. Low Velocity Injury: These fractures are sustained as a result of mild trauma force, as in fall. Accompanied by little soft tissue injury, so chances of healing are high.

In next post, we will discuss about classification based on pattern of fracture.

Fracture Type On the Basis of Complexity Of Treatment.

1. Simple Fracture: A fracture in Two pieces are usually easy to treat. Example transverse fracture of humerus.

2. Complex Fracture: A fracture in multiple pieces are usually difficult to treat. Example communited fracture of tibia.

In next post, we will discuss about classification based on Quantum of force causing fracture.

Fracture Type On the Basis of Relationship with External Environment.

1. Closed Fracture: A fracture not communicating with external environment i.e the overlying skin and other soft tissues are intact.

2. Open Fracture: A fracture with break in the overlying skin and soft tissues, leading to the fracture communicating with the external environment.

A fracture maybe open from within or outside so called internally or externally open fracture.

a. Internally open fracture: The sharp fracture end pierces the skin from within thus resulting in internally open fracture.

b. Externally Open Fracture: The object causing the fracture lacerates the skin and soft tissues over the bone leading to breakage of bone and results in open fracture.

In next post, we will discuss about classification based on complexity of Treatment.

Fracture Type On the Basis of Displacement.

1. Undisplaced Fracture: Easy to identify by the absence of significant displacement.

2. Displaced Fracture: Displacement of the distal fragment i relation to the proximal fragment. It can be in form of shift, angulation or rotation.

In next post, we will discuss about classification based on relationship with external environment.
