Grand Gedeh Veterans Make Huge Donation to GGU
--LD200K for fund drive, USD250 for Scholarship grant
The quest of the administration of the Grand Gedeh University to source funding outside the normal budgetary funnel of the national government through the landmark GGU USD1 m Education Endowment Fund Drive got a major boost over the weekend when the Grand Gedeh Veterans Association honored its unprecedented pledge of LD200,000.00 and an additional USD250 scholarship at a well- attended meeting of the organization at the Gedeh Embassy, Old and New Matadi Junction, Sinkor amid excitement and impactful interaction among its members.
Receiving the contribution on behalf of the university, Elijah Komontey Gbarweay, Chairperson of the Steering Committee overseeing the One Million Dollar Fundraising Campaign for Grand Gedeh University, expressed profound appreciation to the Grand Gedeh Veterans Association for what he described as a timely and significant contribution toward strengthening the institution.
“We have received and continue to receive donations and contributions from Liberians and other institutions from different category of human existence and not to disrespect such gesture, we want to, however, acknowledge that yours is the most significant and touches the innermost thought of the Grand Gedeh University because it is symbolic, milestone driving, historical and defining towards the developmental agenda of Grand Gedeh County. Your institution represents the apex institution as it relates to the intellectual ecosystem of the county. Thanks for your generosity”, an elated Gbarweay told the large gathering amid cheers from the listening audience.
Gbarweay lauded the association for its leadership and commitment to community development, noting that the donation represents the first financial contribution of its kind from the veterans' organization to the university. He said the gesture reflects a strong belief in the transformative power of education and the collective responsibility of citizens to support institutions that are shaping the county’s future.
He further emphasized that the contribution should serve as a catalyst for other organizations, alumni, citizens, and development partners to rally behind the university’s ambitious fundraising campaign. According to him, sustained support from stakeholders is essential to improving educational opportunities and ensuring the long-term success of the institution.
Earlier while presenting the funds, the Chairperson of the Grand Gedeh Veterans Association, Sunday T. Heagbetus, formally presented the contribution and reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to educational advancement in the county.
Heagbetus explained that the donation is intended to support ongoing efforts aimed at enhancing educational services and expanding opportunities for students at Grand Gedeh University. He stressed that education remains one of the most important pillars for the development of Grand Gedeh County and Liberia as a whole.
The veterans' leader encouraged university authorities to ensure that the benefits of the donation reach a broad cross-section of students. He emphasized that educational support should be inclusive and accessible to deserving beneficiaries from various backgrounds, rather than being limited solely to academic merit.
“Investing in education is investing in the future,” Heagbetus stated, adding that the association remains committed to initiatives that empower young people through learning, skills development, and improved access to quality education.
The donation forms part of broader efforts to support the One Million Dollar Fundraising Campaign, an initiative designed to mobilize resources for the expansion and development of Grand Gedeh University. The campaign seeks to finance critical projects, including infrastructure improvements, enhancement of academic programs, and the strengthening of student support services.
The contribution comes amid growing calls from education stakeholders for increased investment in Liberia’s education sector to improve learning outcomes and strengthen institutions of higher learning across the country. The Grand Gedeh Veterans Association’s support is being viewed as a meaningful step toward achieving those objectives while encouraging greater community participation in the development of the university.
