MIE Executive Director Impressed with Progress in New Pre-Primary Curriculum Assessment
The Malawi Institute of Education (MIE) Executive Director, Mr. Jennings Kayira, has praised the progress being made in the assessment of Malawi’s new pre-primary curriculum during a monitoring visit to Mgoza Primary School in Nsanje.
The visit is part of ongoing efforts to assess the effectiveness and gaps of the curriculum and teaching materials before nationwide implementation.
During the visit, Mr. Kayira: ✅ Observed classroom learning activities
✅ Interacted with learners and teachers
✅ Engaged parents on supporting children’s learning at home
“I am impressed with what I have seen today. The classroom is well organized, the teachers are doing an excellent job, and the learners are actively participating,” said Mr. Kayira.
Parents also applauded the initiative, saying public pre-primary classes are increasing access to Early Childhood Education for many families.
According to National Pre-Primary Coordinator Mr. Anthony Malunga, this is Malawi’s first nationally developed standardized pre-primary curriculum designed to strengthen foundational literacy, numeracy, creativity, and innovation.
The initiative is being supported by UNICEF.

MIE Assesses New Pre-Primary Curriculum Ahead of National Rollout
The Malawi Institute of Education (MIE), with support from UNICEF, is carrying out monitoring visits in Salima, Dedza, and Nsanje from 8–12 June to assess the new Pre-Primary Curriculum before it is rolled out nationwide.
The pilot curriculum, introduced in April 2026, aims to improve school readiness and learning outcomes for young children across Malawi.
The assessment has so far been conducted at: ✅ Kalonga Primary School – Salima
✅ Dedza Government Primary School – Dedza
✅ Phombwe Primary School – Nsanje
According to Coordinator Anthony Malunga, the curriculum focuses on four learning areas: 🔹 Numeracy
🔹 Chichewa
🔹 English
🔹 Creative Arts
The visits are helping MIE and education stakeholders gather feedback from teachers, learners, and parents to strengthen the curriculum before nationwide implementation.
Senior Section Head for Phombwe Primary School, Medson Sande, praised the initiative, saying Early Childhood Education helps learners develop understanding and better prepares them for primary school.
Together with UNICEF, MIE remains committed to building a strong educational foundation for Malawi’s children.

The Malawi Institute of Education (MIE), with support from UNESCO, kicked off an important curriculum redesign workshop on Health and Well-being Education for learners in Grades 4 to 6.
Experts from across the education sector including UNIMA, Domasi College of Education, DQAS, and international consultant Dr. Jenny (South Africa), are working together to improve how health and well-being is taught in primary schools.
The goal?
To equip learners with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to live healthy, confident, and responsible lives.
“A learner who is healthy, confident, and resilient is better positioned to succeed in life,” said MIE’s Acting Executive Director, Mr. Jennings Kayira.
UNESCO National Coordinator, Madam Naomi Munthali, reaffirmed UNESCO’s commitment to continue supporting MIE up to the production and distribution of instructional materials.
Dr. Jenny who is the consultant from South Africa said, “The redesigned curriculum should promote protective behaviours, respond to contextual realities, and strengthen learner support strategies. Through Health and Well-being Education, schools can become safe and conducive learning environments that safeguard learners against risks and vulnerabilities.”
This initiative supports Malawi 2063, the Competency-Based Curriculum, and the Sustainable Development Goals.

MIE Receives Vehicle Support from FCDO to Strengthen Implementation of the Mathematics Curriculum Reform Programme
The Malawi Institute of Education through the Department of Curriculum Development has received a Toyota Land Cruiser from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), to support the implementation of the National Mathematics Curriculum Reform Programme for Standards 1 to 4.
This support will greatly improve mobility, enabling programme officers and facilitators to reach schools across the country for monitoring and support activities.
Through this initiative, MIE will continue to strengthen foundational numeracy skills by equipping teachers with effective pedagogical mathematics content knowledge, that enhance mathematics learning in primary schools.
MIE sincerely appreciates the UK Government, through the FCDO, for their continued partnership and commitment to improving the quality of education in Malawi.

MIE Completes School Library Support Visits!
The Malawi Institute of Education (MIE), through its Library Services Department, has successfully wrapped up a week-long visit to schools benefiting from the African Library Project (ALP).
From 25th to 29th May, the team visited 33 schools in Nsanje, Chikwawa, Chiradzulu, Phalombe, and Zomba.
The visits focused on:
✅ Checking how library books are being used
✅ Identifying challenges schools are facing
✅ Encouraging better library management
✅ Promoting a strong reading culture among learners
Speaking with one of the teacher librarian from Chimadzimadzi primary school in Nchalo, Mdalirana Mkwezalamba said, “we are very grateful for ALP because despite being a hard to reach area, we were still considered, and these monitoring visits are encouraging and continue to equip us with professioanl knolewdge in library management. We are witnessing tremendeous improvements in learners reading culture and academic performance.”
ALP Coordinator Dalitso Mountain expressed gratitude to MIE Management for their strong support, highlighting its importance in making the program a success.

Transforming Malawi’s Education Landscape Through Curriculum Innovation
Big steps are being made to improve education in Malawi!
This week, education experts, lecturers, and stakeholders have gathered at the Malawi Institute of Education (MIE) in Domasi to review and validate draft syllabuses for Grades 5 and 6.
The goal? To strengthen the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) so learners don’t just know things but can actually apply what they learn in real life.
During the official opening by the Principal Secretary for Administration in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Madam Thokozile Banda, highlighted: It’s not about rushing to approve documents it’s about getting them right.
With participants from institutions such as MANEB, MACRA, and universities and colleges across the country, this workshop is an important step toward building a more inclusive and practical education system for every child.
Together, we are shaping the future of learning in Malawi.

Recognizing Dedication: Alick, Staff of the Month for March
The Malawi Institute of Education has awarded Mr. Alick Kondowe from the Kitchen and Catering Section as Staff of the Month for March.
Mr. Kondowe expressed heartfelt gratitude, saying this was his first recognition since joining MIE in 2015. He extended his appreciation to the management for introducing an initiative he described as truly motivating.
“We must always show up and do our part, no matter the situation,” he encouraged fellow staff members.
