New Week. Stay the Course.

The strength of a democracy depends not only on voters, but also on the quality of candidates presented for public office.

Political parties have a responsibility to field credible, competent, and visionary leaders who can serve the public interest.

Leadership matters. Candidate quality matters.

The rainy season is here, and with it comes a familiar challenge, an increase in mosquito breeding and malaria cases.

But have you ever wondered how mosquitoes multiply so quickly?

The answer often lies in stagnant water. From uncovered containers and discarded tyres to blocked compounds and water-filled waste materials, these small collections of water can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes within days.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Nigeria accounts for about 27% of the global malaria burden, making malaria one of the country's most significant public health challenges. The risk often increases during the rainy season when stagnant water becomes more common.

While individuals can help by keeping their surroundings clean, emptying water containers, and properly disposing of waste, government agencies also play a critical role through environmental sanitation, waste management, public awareness campaigns, fumigation, and strengthening primary healthcare services.

Protecting our communities requires a collective effort. A cleaner environment not only reduces mosquito breeding but also contributes to healthier and safer communities.

At SERDEC, we encourage residents, community leaders, and public institutions to work together in promoting environmental cleanliness and disease prevention.

Remember: Removing stagnant water today can help prevent illness tomorrow.

PRESS RELEASE

June 12, 2026

JUNE 12: STRENGTHENING DEMOCRACY THROUGH ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP AND ACCOUNTABLE GOVERNANCE

As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, the Socio-Economic Research and Development Centre (SERDEC) joins citizens across the country in reflecting on the significance of June 12 and the enduring journey toward democratic consolidation.

June 12 stands as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by Nigerians in pursuit of democratic governance, political inclusion, and respect for the will of the people. It symbolizes the resilience of citizens who believed in a Nigeria where leadership is accountable, institutions are strong, and every voice matters.

More than three decades after the historic June 12, 1993 election, Nigeria has made notable progress in sustaining democratic rule. However, the promise of democracy extends beyond periodic elections. It requires responsive institutions, transparent governance, active citizen engagement, and equitable socio-economic development.

While democratic structures have continued to evolve, challenges remain. Issues such as declining public trust in institutions, electoral concerns, youth disengagement, insecurity, economic hardship, and limited civic participation continue to test the strength of our democracy. Addressing these challenges requires collective commitment from government institutions, civil society organizations, the private sector, and citizens themselves.

SERDEC believes that democracy flourishes when citizens are informed, engaged, and empowered to participate meaningfully in public affairs. It is through active citizenship, constructive dialogue, and accountable leadership that democratic governance can deliver tangible improvements in the lives of the people.

As we commemorate Democracy Day 2026, SERDEC calls for:

* Strengthened democratic institutions that uphold transparency, accountability, and the rule of law.

* Electoral reforms that enhance public confidence and ensure inclusive participation in the democratic process.

* Greater investment in civic education to promote informed and responsible citizenship, particularly among young people.

* Improved mechanisms for citizen engagement in governance, public budgeting, and policy implementation.

* Policies that address socio-economic inequalities and ensure that the benefits of democracy are felt by all Nigerians.

June 12 should not only be a day of remembrance but also an opportunity to renew our collective commitment to building a democratic society that is inclusive, participatory, and responsive to the needs of all citizens.

As Nigeria reflects on the significance of June 12, the task before us is clear: to strengthen democratic institutions, expand civic participation, and ensure that governance delivers meaningful outcomes for all citizens. The future of our democracy depends not only on those who govern, but also on the active engagement of the people.

Signed:
Tijani Abdulkareem

Take a moment and look around you.

What does your environment say about our daily habits and our collective responsibility?

As Abuja continues to grow, so does the challenge of waste management. Studies estimate that residents generate between 0.6 and 0.8 kilograms of waste per person daily, with a significant portion made up of organic waste and plastics.

While individuals have a responsibility to dispose of waste properly, effective waste management also requires strong government action. Regular waste collection, adequate disposal facilities, public waste bins, recycling initiatives, and environmental education are essential to keeping our communities clean and healthy.

When waste is improperly managed, the consequences are visible: polluted surroundings, health risks, blocked public spaces, and a decline in the quality of life within our communities.

The good news is that positive change is possible when citizens and government work together. Responsible environmental habits, supported by efficient waste management systems, can create cleaner neighborhoods and a healthier future for all.

At SERDEC, we encourage greater environmental responsibility, stronger public awareness, and sustainable waste management practices that protect both people and the environment.

Remember: A cleaner environment is not achieved by government alone, nor by citizens alone, it is a shared responsibility.

Protecting the rights of women voters is essential for building a fair, peaceful, and inclusive democracy. Women should be able to vote freely without fear of intimidation, harassment, violence, or discrimination during elections. Ensuring their safety and equal participation helps strengthen democratic values and gives every citizen a voice in shaping the future of the country.

One major way to protect women voters is by providing secure and safe voting environments. Security agencies, electoral bodies, and communities must work together to prevent violence and respond quickly to any form of abuse during elections. Public awareness campaigns should also educate citizens on respecting women’s political rights and encouraging equal treatment at polling units.

In addition, women should be encouraged to speak out against electoral abuse and report incidents of intimidation or discrimination. Supporting women candidates, promoting gender equality, and teaching women about their voting rights can increase confidence and participation in the electoral process. When women vote safely and freely, democracy grows stronger and society becomes more inclusive for everyone.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2026

Every year, communities across Nigeria face the devastating consequences of environmental neglect. Flooded streets, blocked drainage systems, polluted waterways, and mountains of waste have become familiar sights in many towns and cities.

While climate change and heavy rainfall contribute to these challenges, human activities often make the situation worse. The indiscriminate disposal of plastic bottles, nylon bags, and other waste materials blocks drainage channels, prevents the free flow of water, and increases the risk of flooding.

World Environment Day reminds us that protecting the environment is not the responsibility of governments alone. Every individual has a role to play. Simple actions such as proper waste disposal, reducing plastic use, planting trees, keeping our surroundings clean, and protecting natural resources can make a significant difference.

A healthy environment supports healthy lives, stronger communities, and sustainable development. The choices we make today will determine the kind of world future generations inherit tomorrow.

As we commemorate World Environment Day, SERDEC calls on citizens, communities, institutions, and policymakers to work together in promoting environmental responsibility and sustainable practices.

The environment belongs to all of us. Protecting it is not an option, it is a necessity.

Our Environment. Our Responsibility. Our Future.
