*UNICAL STAFF DRIVING UNIVERSITY'S GROWTH AND GLOBAL AMBITION β VC*
By Uwatomo Abimbola
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Prof. Offiong Effanga Offiong, has described staff members as the driving force behind the institution's quest for excellence and global competitiveness.
Prof. Offiong made this known during a Town Hall Meeting with staff held at the Godswill Akpabio International Conference Centre, University of Calabar, six months after assuming office as Vice-Chancellor.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice-Chancellor said the meeting was convened to engage staff, assess the administration's progress so far, and outline the next phase of the university's development. He expressed appreciation to both teaching and non-teaching staff for their dedication, resilience, and professionalism, noting that the achievements recorded within the past six months were made possible through their collective efforts.
He emphasized that every staff member is a critical stakeholder in the university's success, stressing that the institution belongs to the entire university community and not to the Vice-Chancellor alone.
As part of efforts to improve staff welfare and the university's working environment, Prof. Offiong announced plans for the construction of a larger conference hall, a modern registry building, additional office spaces, and the rehabilitation of student hostels.
The Vice-Chancellor also assured staff that outstanding promotion arrears would be paid and directed the Bursar, Prince Joseph Odom, to ensure the prompt clearance of pension backlogs.
On accountability and discipline, he warned that Heads of Departments who shield absentee staff from appropriate sanctions could face dismissal. He maintained that discipline remains essential to preserving the university's reputation and rewarding hardworking employees.
Prof. Offiong further disclosed that the ongoing crackdown on admission racketeering is part of efforts to protect the integrity of the institution and strengthen public confidence in the university.
He also cautioned staff against drug abuse, cultism, and the spread of misinformation, reminding them that only the Information and Public Relations Unit is authorized to speak on behalf of the university.
Reaffirming his open-door policy, the Vice-Chancellor encouraged staff members to freely communicate their concerns and suggestions, assuring them of a receptive and inclusive administration.
The meeting, which marked Prof. Offiong's first major engagement with staff since assuming office, underscored the administration's commitment to fostering collaboration in pursuit of the university's vision of excellence and global relevance.

NUCJ: FOUNDING MEMBER RECOUNTS UNION'S ORIGIN AT UNICAL
By Umoh Samuel
A founding member of the Nigerian University Campus Journalists (NUCJ) has reflected on the union's humble beginnings at the University of Calabar, revealing that the organization was established during the 1987/1988 academic session.
The pioneer member, identified as Oraukwu News on Facebook (Comr. Pat Okonkwo), made the disclosure in a comment on an NUCJ Facebook post, where he shared details about the union's founding and expressed delight that the organization remains active decades after its establishment.
According to him, the inaugural meeting of the union was held at the Old NAT Building in the University of Calabar, with representatives from about four universities in attendance.
"We formed this Union in 1987/88 at Unical. About four universities attended the inaugural meeting at the Old NAT. The first President was Jenkins Okoh. I was PRO. Glad to see it's still in existence," he wrote.
Oraukwu further revealed that Jenkins Okoh served as the first President of the union, while he held the position of Public Relations Officer (PRO) in the pioneer executive.
The comment has generated excitement among members of the campus journalism community, particularly as NUCJ celebrates another Press Week. The revelation provides a rare historical insight into the origins of the union and highlights the enduring legacy of the pioneers who laid its foundation at the University of Calabar.
NUCJ has since grown into one of Nigeria's foremost student media organizations, championing campus journalism, media excellence, and professional development among student journalists across tertiary institutions.

*UNICAL May Suspend Medical Laboratory Science Admission for 2026/2027 Session, VC Announces*
The University of Calabar may suspend admission into its Medical Laboratory Science programme for the 2026/2027 academic session due to quota and regulatory issues.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Offiong Effanga Offiong disclosed this on Wednesday during a town hall meeting with students and staff at the Godswill Akpabio International Conference Centre.
Responding to student concerns on admission irregularities, Prof. Offiong said the admission process would now be handled strictly by the universityβs Central Admissions Planning Committee to ensure transparency and compliance with NUC regulations.
He added that based on current quota allocations and available facilities, βthere might be no admissions into the Medical Laboratory Science programme for the current admission cycle.β
The VC noted that the move was to prevent a repeat of past cases where students paid fees, progressed academically, and were later withdrawn due to quota violations. βWe want to avoid students spending years only to face withdrawal later,β he said.
He assured that other health-related and science courses would continue to admit students, while management works with NUC and regulatory bodies to resolve the MLS quota issue for future sessions.
Students at the meeting had raised concerns over admission irregularities, including students being withdrawn mid-programme. The VC said the new committee-led process would make admissions more transparent.
The announcement affects prospective JAMB and direct entry candidates seeking admission into UNICALβs MLS department for 2026/2027. Aspirants are advised to check JAMB CAPS and the UNICAL portal for updates when admission lists are released.
