Topic: USE OF ARTICLE «L’»
🔎 What's the « article défini ‹L’› » ❓
° «L’» is the elided form of the singular definite articles LE (masculine) and LA (feminine).
° It's used instead of LE/LA when the noun it introduces begins with a VOWEL or SILENT ‘H’.
♦️ CORE PURPOSE: AVOID VOWEL CLASH
🔔 French avoids placing a word ending in a vowel directly before a word beginning with a vowel or a silent ‘h’. This creates an unpleasant sound or makes speech flow difficult. However, «L’» solves this problem. ☺️
🔵 WHEN TO USE «L’» WITH VOWELS❓❓
Before a noun starting with any of the following vowels: a, e, i, o, u, y
=> Le ami ❌ L’ami [la-mi] ✔️ (the friend - masculine)♂️
=> La école ❌ L’école [lay-kɔl] ✔️ (the school - feminine)♀️
=> Le oiseau ❌ L’oiseau [lwa-zo] ✔️ (the bird - masculine)♂️
=> La université ❌ L’université [lu-ni-vɛR-si-tay] ✔️ (the university) ♀️
🔵 WHEN TO USE «L’» WITH THE ‘H’ ❓❓
This is crucial ❕ French has two (2) types of ‘h’ just like its cousin English: ‘h’ muet (silent ‘h’) and unaspirated ‘h’. But today we will look into the former.
🔔 «h muet (silent ‘h’) acts as if it doesn't exist in a given word. However, in French, a word that starts with a letter is not pronounced. For example:
=> Le homme ❌ L’homme [lɔm] ✔️ (the man) ♂️
=> La heure ❌ L’heure [leuhR] ✔️ (the time/hour - feminine) ♀️
=> La herbe ❌ L’herbe [laiRb] ✔️ (the grass - feminine)♀️
=> Le hiver ❌ L’hiver [li-vaiR] ✔️ (winter - masculine)♂️
=> Le hôtel ❌ L’hôtel [lo-tɛl] ✔️ (the hotel - masculine)♂️
=> La harmonie ❌ L’harmonie [laR-mɔ-ni] ✓ (harmony - feminine).♀️
♦️ KEY RULES AND IMPORTANT DETAILS OF «L’»
💭 Determining gender: This particular article doesn't indicate gender. That's to say, «L’» itself is NEUTRAL. You must know the gender of nouns from vocabulary learning or context clues (like adjectives, past participles agreeing with it).
💭 Pronunciation and transcription: this article is pronounced as part of the word altogether and creating a smooth link:
🔰 L’ ➕ ami 🟰 L’ami [lami] and in two syllables, it gives us la-mi ✔️
🔰 L’ ➕ école 🟰 L'école [laykol]. In two syllables, it gives us lay-kol ✔️
💭 Contractions with prepositions:
