The Importance of Reviving Mass Transit in Kano State, Nigeria
Kano State, Nigeria's most populous state and center of commerce, once had a bus transit system that connected various parts of the city and its environs. This system, which played a crucial role in the daily lives of its residents, has since fallen into disrepair and disuse. Reflecting on the past and understanding the importance of the bus transit can help us appreciate the need to revive and modernize this essential service.
Not too long ago, Kano's bus system was the lifeline of the city. The buses, often referred to by their familiar names such as "Gandu Gidan Zoo Sheka," "Bata,โ โyan Kura," โHotoro Maririโ etc. reflecting the route they served, were a common sight on the streets, making stops at major stations like that of Sabon Gari, and the Rimi Asibiti Station. Each of these stations hummed with activity, serving as vital hubs for commuters traveling to various parts of the city.
The buses offered cheap and affordable transportation for students, workers, as well traders. They were especially important for those who couldn't afford private cars, offering a sense of mobility. The system was indicative of how bus transit could enhance the quality of life by ensuring that everyone, regardless of their economic status, had access to transportation.
Over the years, however, the bus system began to decline. Poor maintenance, lack of investment, and the rise of informal transportation options like the Adaidaita sahu keke napeps (tricycle) contributed to the gradual disappearance of the bus system in the state. As the buses disappeared, so did the efficiency and affordability they offered.
The lack of a robust mass transit system has led to increased traffic congestion and higher transportation costs, more recently after the removal of the fuel subsidy. This has affected commuters particularly the less privileged, who now spend a significant portion of their income on transportation.
Reintroducing and modernizing the bus transit system in Kano State is not just a matter of convenience; it is a necessity for sustainable urban development, and timely especially now that the federal government is introducing CNG vehicles on our roads. Here are some key reasons why:
1. A reliable mass transit system can boost the local economy by providing affordable transportation for students, workers, and traders, reducing the cost of goods and services. It can also attract investment, as efficient transportation is a key factor in urban development.
2. Public transportation promotes social inclusion by ensuring that all residents, regardless of their economic status, can access essential services and opportunities. It enhances mobility for everyone.
3. A well-functioning bus transit system can significantly reduce traffic congestion by providing a viable alternative to private cars and informal transport modes. This would lead to shorter travel times.
4. Buss transit can offer safer and more reliable transportation compared to informal options. This can reduce the risk of accidents and improve the overall travel experience.
Reviving Kano's bus transit system requires a multi-faceted approach. The government, experts, private sector, and the community must work together to invest in modern infrastructure, acquire new buses, and implement efficient management practices. Learning from successful transit systems in other parts of the world, we can adapt best practices to suit our local context.
Incorporating modern technology, such as exclusive bus lanes, bus priority lanes, and digital payment systems can enhance the efficiency and user experience of the bus system. Public awareness campaigns can also play a crucial role in encouraging people to shift from private and informal transportation to public buses.
