Singers are Really Going Through a Lot😩

From mic doing "piooooooo”, to generator refusing to start, to bad sound systems… chai! 🤦🏽‍♂️

So tell me, why won’t singers experience vocal strain after performing? 😒

In many cases, singers suffer vocal strain not because they have bad technique, but because of poor sound conditions.

When the sound system is bad, some singers are forced to overproject or “augment” their voice just to be heard clearly. In doing so, they end up pushing beyond healthy vocal limits, and after performance, they feel throat pain, soreness, or even hoarseness. 💔

Sometimes, there may even be no power supply at all during a performance. The singer is forced to go “black and white” — no amplification, no proper backing instruments. In such moments, especially if the drummer continues to drive the tempo, the singer may strain the voice trying to project naturally over the sound.

This is why some singers end up with a strained or hoarse voice after ministration — not always because of poor technique, but sometimes because of environmental and technical challenges.

So here’s my advice:

If you experience vocal strain after such situations, please take a few days off and rest your voice properly. Don’t push through pain — it only makes it worse. Your voice needs recovery just like any other instrument.

And to Choir Masters (CMs) and Music Directors (MDs), please be considerate. When a singer clearly shows signs of strain, allow them to rest. If possible, avoid scheduling them for heavy singing that week.

Not every singer has access to a vocal coach yet, so patience and understanding go a long way in protecting voices and building healthier singers.

I get a lot of messages about this, and while some cases are technique-related, many are simply due to poor sound conditions or overuse.

Let’s protect the voice — it’s the real instrument...🥰

Your voice grows faster when effort is replaced with efficiency.

Make Sure You Learn How to Stay Relaxed When Practicing:

Relaxation may seem a little boring at first because we're often tempted to force things or put in more effort than necessary. However, once your body learns how to produce sound with ease, your voice will begin to soar✈️

Great singing is not about how hard you work; it's about how efficiently you work. A relaxed body and voice can help you achieve a better tone, easier high notes, improved vocal agility, and greater vocal freedom.

Learning to sing with less tension is one of the most valuable skills a singer can develop.

Anyway, there's much more to say about this topic, and we'll discuss it in future lessons. 😉

Stay tuned..!

Instrumentalists Can Affect a Singer's Performance Too..! 😄

I've spent quite some time talking about how singers can frustrate instrumentalists. But did you know that instrumentalists can also affect a singer's performance?

If you've experienced this before, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. 😄

I'm bringing this up to remind singers that sometimes, a poor performance may not be entirely their fault. Occasionally, the issue may come from the instrumentalists. That's why it's important to learn how to handle such situations without da:maging your confidence or that of your instrumentalists.

Let me give you an example:

A keyboardist may mistakenly start a song in a different key from the one that was rehearsed. As a result, the singer may suddenly find the song too high or too low and struggle throughout the performance.

This type of situation is more likely when the accompaniment consists mainly of a keyboardist and a drummer. When there are additional instrumentalists, such as a bassist and others, they often help reinforce the intended key and harmony, making such mistakes easier to detect.

Of course, this is just one example. There are many other situations where instrumentalists can unintentionally make things difficult for a singer.

The important thing is this:

Whenever a performance doesn't go well, take time to identify what actually happened. The problem may be from the singer, the instrumentalists, or sometimes a combination of both.

Understanding the real cause will help everyone improve and prevent the same issue from happening again.

That's that..! 😄

Have you ever experienced something like this? What happened?

Let's hear your story in the comments.

The strength of a choir is not in one great singer, but in many singers working together.

A Little Advice to Choristers:

When it comes to the praise session, don't leave all the work to the lead singer and backup singers alone. Dance, clap, sing along, and participate actively!

Your involvement encourages the praise team on duty and boosts their confidence and morale.

Don't just stand there like a log of wood, watching the praise team do all the sweating. 😄 As a chorister, you are part of the team, so join in wholeheartedly.

Sometimes, the congregation connects more easily with the music when they see the choir united in joy, energy, and expression.

In fact, there's nothing wrong with the choir learning a few simple dance steps for certain praise songs. 😋 Trust me, it's a beautiful sight to behold! 😍

A lively and supportive choir can make a huge difference in the atmosphere of a praise session.

Now, let me ask you... 👀😂

How do you feel when you're leading praise, sweating and giving it your all, but nobody is dancing, clapping, singing along, or responding?

Let's hear your thoughts in the comments..!✍🏽

Have you ever noticed that many singers find worship songs easier to lead than praise songs?

In this video, I share my thoughts on why that might be the case, looking at factors such as vocal demands, energy levels, familiarity, and emotional connection.

I'd love to hear your perspective. Do you find worship songs easier to lead than praise songs, or is it the other way around?

Share your thoughts in the comments.
