LASUED VC Donates Sports Infrastructure to LASU in an Act of Gratitude

In another demonstration of strong support for academic excellence and institutional sports development, the ever-philanthropic Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University of Education, Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, attended the official commissioning of the Handball Spectators' Gallery at Lagos State University, Ojo, on Thursday 18th June, 2026. The sports infrastructure, generously donated by Prof. Lafiaji-Okuneye, was designed to allow spectators to comfortably and enjoyably watch handball games at the university's courts.

In her remarks, the sports enthusiast and donor of the facility, an alumna of LASU from the Department of Physical and Health Education, described the occasion as more than just the unveiling of a structure; it was a moment of gratitude and an opportunity to celebrate a bond that has lasted over a decade. She compared this relationship to that between a daughter and her home, acknowledging the institution as her academic birthplace. Furthermore, she reaffirmed her love for her alma mater, emphasising that whenever she speaks of Lagos State University, she does so not as a visitor or outsider, but as someone whose roots are deeply embedded within the institution. Using Yoruba idiom, she said, in her words, "Ọmọ bọ wálé" the child has come back home. And when a child returns home, particularly to the house that nurtured and raised him or her, such a child must return with appreciation and gratitude," she added.

"By the special grace of God and the confidence reposed in me by the Government and people of Lagos State, I was entrusted with the historic responsibility of serving as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University of Education. Being the best among equals, I was called to lead the birth, stabilization, and growth of a new university. It was a special assignment, a call to service. Yet throughout that period, I never forgot where I came from. LASU remained home.

Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, this Spectators' Gallery is a modest token of appreciation to the institution that made me what I am today. It is an expression of gratitude to my alma mater and to generations of teachers, mentors, colleagues, and students whose lives have enriched mine. I firmly believe that universities are not built by governments alone. Great universities are sustained by a community of committed stakeholders-alumni, benefactors, friends, corporate bodies, and individuals who understand that education is a shared responsibility. Across the world, the greatest institutions thrive because those who have benefited from them cultivate the culture of giving back. Indeed, giving back is not merely philanthropy; it is gratitude in action.

Ladies and gentlemen, sports occupy a strategic place in university life. They promote physical fitness, teamwork, discipline, healthy competition, leadership, resilience, and social cohesion. They unite communities and create opportunities for excellence beyond the classroom. I hope that this Spectators' Gallery will enhance the sporting experience on this campus, provide comfort for spectators, encourage wider participation in sports, and contribute to the development of talents that will bring honour to Lagos State University, Lagos State, and Nigeria," she added.

In the same vein, Prof. Bidemi Lafiaji-Okuneye called and challenged all alumni of LASU to remember that the greatness of an institution is measured not only by what it gives to us but also by what we give back to it. Whether through mentorship, scholarships, infrastructure, endowments, advocacy, or acts of service, "every contribution matters. No gift is too small when motivated by love for one's alma mater," she concluded.

In conclusion, she reiterated that her gesture was not an end in itself. Rather, it was a testimony to the enduring spirit of Lagos State University and to the values of excellence, service, and gratitude that the institution instils in all who pass through its gates. Prof. Bidemi Lafiaji-Okuneye prayed that the structure serves generations yet unborn, inspires a culture of giving, strengthens sporting heritage and also prayed for the continued progress of the institution and remain a beacon of excellence in teaching, research, innovation, and community service.

Delivering her own speech at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM expressed her gratitude for the thoughtful gesture of Prof. Bidemi Lafiaji-Okuneye. According to her, "this gathering is not just about the unveiling of a physical structure. It is about celebrating legacy, vision, and the enduring bond between an institution and its graduate. This gallery stands as a symbol of commitment to sports development, youth empowerment, and institutional pride" she mentioned. Also, she noted that handball is more than a game but a discipline, teamwork, resilience, and strategic thinking in motion.

She said that the provision of the dedicated Spectators' Gallery elevates the experience of sports, encourages greater student-athlete participation and strengthens the culture of healthy competition within the university community.

While wholeheartedly appreciating prof. Bidemi Lafiaji-Okuneye for donating to the institution, she described her as a distinguished and illustrious alumna of LASU and emphasised the importance of her generosity, noting that it is not just for the present generations but a lasting investment in the future of student-athletes who will draw inspiration from the facility. Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello concluded by saying that Prof. Bidemi Lafiaji-Okuneye has demonstrated that alumni loyalty, is expressed not only in words but in impactful action. "This gallery will undoubtedly serve as a hub of excitement, unity, and sporting excellence. It will echo with cheers of victory, lessons of defeat and spirit of sportsmanship that defines true champions. As we unveil this facility today, may it stand as a beacon of excellence and a reminder that together, we can continue to build a university that excels not only in academics but also in sports, character and community development".

On behalf of LASU Management, the Vice-Chancellor pledged that the facility donated to the institution would be put to the best use and would be maintained and assured that Prof. Bidemi Lafiaji-Okuneye would never regret donating to her alma mater while also wishing her continued success in her endeavours.

LASUED Reinforces Entrepreneurial Education as Students Display Innovations at SAP 001 Practical Exhibition

‎The Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), through its Directorate of Entrepreneurship and Skill Development (DESD), on Thursday 11th June, 2026, hosted the Skill Acquisition Programme (SAP 001) Exhibition and Practical Assessment for 100-level students. The Programme held at the Frontage of Oluremi Tinubu Hall of the Oto/Ijanikin Main Campus, provided a vibrant platform for participants to showcase the practical skills, innovations, and entrepreneurial competencies acquired through the programme.

Declaring the exhibition open on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Daodu Moruf Adedayo, described the exercise as a crucial component of the SAP 001 practical examination. He emphasised the academic importance of the course, cautioning students against treating it as a mere extracurricular activity, as it carries the same academic weight as other university courses and can be failed or carried over.

Professor Daodu explained that assessment would be based on both group presentations and individual contributions, stressing the need for active participation by every student. Reaffirming LASUED’s identity as a University of Entrepreneurship, he noted that the institution remains committed to equipping students with practical skills that will enable them to become self-reliant, earn income while studying, and emerge as job creators rather than job seekers after graduation.

‎During a tour of the exhibition stands, the Deputy Vice Chancellor commended the students for their creativity, dedication, and innovation. He particularly praised a group that established a functional mobile barbershop and others that demonstrated remarkable teamwork through coordinated presentation attire. While applauding the impressive displays, he advised students to learn how to confidently recite the LASUED Anthem, reminding them that knowledge of the anthem would form part of the forthcoming institutional examinations, describing the anthem as an important symbol of the University's identity and culture. The exhibition, designed to showcase students’ trade skills, creativity, and readiness for self-reliance, was subsequently dedicated to the advancement of vocational excellence and the benefit of humanity.

In her remarks, the Director of the Directorate of Entrepreneurship and Skill Development (DESD), Professor Olaleye B. O., described the exhibition as a major milestone in LASUED’s commitment to producing graduates who are not only academically sound but also equipped with practical and entrepreneurial competencies. She explained that the SAP 001 programme was introduced in line with the University's vision of nurturing self-reliant graduates capable of creating opportunities for themselves and others in an increasingly competitive global environment.

Prof. Olaleye noted that the exhibition represented far more than a practical assessment exercise, describing it as a showcase of creativity, innovation, resilience, and entrepreneurial potential. According to her, students had undergone intensive hands-on training across various skill areas, gaining experiences that complement their academic pursuits. She emphasised that today's employers increasingly value graduates who possess problem-solving abilities, creativity, adaptability, digital competence, and entrepreneurial thinking qualities the programme is specifically designed to cultivate.

Highlighting the theme of the event, “Your Skill Is Your Currency,” the Director stressed that skills remain valuable tools for income generation, career sustainability, and economic empowerment. She commended the enthusiasm and commitment demonstrated by students throughout the programme and expressed appreciation to the University Management, facilitators, coordinators, assessors, and staff members whose support ensured the successful implementation of the initiative.

Special recognition was accorded to the assessors, Prof. Ogabi Cornelius, Prof. Omolara Loko, and Prof. Ajani Safurat for their dedication to maintaining the integrity and credibility of the assessment process through objective evaluation and professional feedback. Professor Olaleye also encouraged assessors to uphold the highest standards of professionalism while urging students to confidently showcase their talents, innovations, and entrepreneurial abilities. She expressed optimism that the exhibition would further inspire a culture of creativity, enterprise, and excellence across the LASUED community.

The SAP 001 Exhibition and Practical Assessment featured an array of student-produced goods and services, practical demonstrations of acquired skills, project evaluations, interactive engagements with guests, presentation of assessment reports, and recognition of outstanding performances. The event once again underscored LASUED’s commitment to innovation-driven education and entrepreneurship development, reinforcing its mission of producing graduates equipped with the skills, creativity, and confidence required to thrive in a dynamic global economy.
