① Name the struggle before it arrives Before a difficult task, tell students directly:

"This part will confuse you the first time. That's not a sign something is wrong, that's what real thinking feels like."

Students would say: "Teacher, I think I'm in the river."

She'd respond: "Good. Keep swimming."

② Ask about strategy not the answer When a student is stuck, don't ask "what did you get?" Ask:

"What have you tried so far?" This single shift moves attention from the product to the process, which is where real learning lives.

③ Break the task into visible steps A two-page comprehension looks like a mountain. Broken into four steps, it's a path.

Step 1: Read once. Just get the general idea.
Step 2: Find where the question points in the passage.
Step 3: Write your answer in your own words.
Step 4: Check it actually answers what was asked.
Each step completed = a small win = fuel to keep going.

④ Make failure safe In many Nigerian classrooms, admitting confusion is risky.

Students have learned that the safest option is to go quiet.

Replace "I can't do this" with "I can't do this yet."

That one word changes everything.

It tells a student that where they are now is not where they have to stay.
