How to Handle Tantrums in Public

She dropped on the supermarket floor, screaming + kicking… and 20 people were watching 👀 Parents, here’s what to do when tantrums go public 👇

SHORT STORY:
Mama Chioma took 4-year-old Kamsi to Shoprite. Kamsi saw chocolates and shouted “I want it! NOW!” Mama said “No, we didn’t budget for it.” Kamsi went full drama: on the floor, kicking, “I hate you! You’re wicked!”

People started staring. Mama’s face went hot with embarrassment. Old her would have shouted “Stand up! You’re disgracing me!” But she remembered: Kids don’t throw tantrums to disgrace you. They melt down because they’re overwhelmed.

So she took a breath, squatted beside Kamsi, and whispered: “I see you’re upset. We can’t buy chocolate today. I’m right here with you. When you’re ready, we’ll hold hands and continue shopping.” She ignored the stares. After 2 minutes, Kamsi stood up, took her hand. No chocolate. No shame. Just connection.

Lesson: Your child’s tantrum is not about you. Stay calm and the crowd will forget faster than your child will.

3 TIPS FOR PARENTS DURING PUBLIC TANTRUMS: in the comment section 👇
1. Lower Your Volume, Not Your Standards
Don’t shout to “save face”. Whisper or use a calm voice. Kids match your energy. If you panic, they escalate. Calm is contagious.

2. Move if You Can, Connect if You Can’t
If possible, step aside to a quieter corner. If not, get on their eye level right there. Say: “You’re angry. I’m here. We’ll talk when you’re calm.” Safety > shopping list.

3. Ignore the Audience, Focus on the Child
People will stare. Let them. You’re not parenting for the crowd. After calm returns, don’t lecture in public. Save the teaching for home. In the moment, just connection.

Save this before your next mall run 💾 Tantrums are training, not trouble.

Stress & Burnout Prevention

You walked into class smiling… by 3rd period you’re snapping at students and your head is pounding 😩
Teachers, we can’t pour from an empty cup.

This 60-second story + 3 tips will save your sanity.

SHORT STORY:
Mrs. Amina taught 60 pupils + marked 120 scripts after closing.

Every day she carried home a bag of books “just for 1 hour”.
By Friday she was crying in the staff room. Her HOD told her: “Amina, the school will stand without you for one evening. But your children at home won’t.”
That night she left the bag in school. Monday she came back rested. Her teaching improved, not reduced. Burnout doesn’t make you a better teacher.
Rest does.

3 QUICK TIPS FOR TEACHERS in the comment section. 👇
1. The 2-Minute Reset Between Classes
Before the next class, close the door, take 3 deep breaths, drink water, stretch your shoulders. Whisper: “I release this class. I receive strength for the next.” Reset > React.

2. Mark Smarter, Not Harder
Use codes: ✓ = correct, Sp = spelling, // = new paragraph. Don’t rewrite essays. Pick 2 things to correct per script. Students learn more from focused feedback than red ink everywhere.

3. Leave Work at School Rule
Set a “closing time”. 4pm = bag down. If it didn’t get done, it wasn’t urgent. Your family, your health, your sleep are also part of your job. Monday-you will thank Friday-you.

Save this for Monday when the week feels heavy 💾

“Your son has failed WAEC. His future is finished.” That was the report. 15 years later, that same boy signed my salary as his employee 😭

Short True Life Story:
The Boy Who Failed WAEC But Became CEO

2010. My neighbor’s son, Emeka, opened his WAEC result. 7 F9s. His father didn’t speak to him for 3 weeks. “You’ve disgraced this family.” The boy stopped eating. Stopped talking.

But his auntie did one thing different. She didn’t shout. She asked: “Emeka, if school isn’t your path, what IS your path?”

Emeka loved fixing phones. He would open Nokia 3310 with needle and pin. So auntie used her ₦20k savings. Bought him tools. “Fail WAEC, but don’t fail yourself.”

He started repairing phones under the mango tree. 2015: Small shop. 2020: 3 branches + 12 staff. 2024: He won “Young Tech CEO of Anambra State”. His father now introduces him as “My son, the engineer.”

WAEC paper couldn’t measure his hands. It couldn’t measure his grit.

Boring topics don't exist, only boring delivery exists!

I once taught “Fractions” for 40 minutes… only to realize my JSS1 students thought I was teaching how to “break” their food. 40 minutes wasted 😭 True story.

Short True Life Story:
The Lesson Plan That Failed Me

A teacher once shared:

Monday morning, 7:30am. I had NO lesson plan for Basic Science. Principal was doing spot checks. Panic mode: ON.

I grabbed textbook, opened “Water Cycle” and started copying notes on the board. Evaporation, condensation, precipitation... big grammar, zero life.

5 minutes in: Yawns everywhere. One boy asked “Sir, will this one come out in exam?” Another girl was drawing cartoon on her book.

Then I remembered: “Make it local.” I stopped, grabbed a kettle from the staff room. Boiled water.

“Class, watch this steam. That’s evaporation like sun drying your mama’s clothes. See water drops on the cover? That’s condensation like cold drink bottle in the morning. When it falls? That’s rain - precipitation!”

Suddenly hands were up. “Sir, so that’s why ground is wet after rain?” “Sir, can we use this for exam?”

Lesson saved. But my heart learned: Textbook notes ≠ lesson. Connection = lesson.

He stopped telling her about his day at age 9. By age 13, she didn’t know his best friend’s name. The silence started small… with one “Don’t talk too much” 😶

True Life Story: The Child Who Stopped Talking at Home

Aisha’s son Tunde used to narrate everything. “Mummy guess what? Musa fell in mud!” But after one long day, she snapped: “Tunde, I’m tired. Don’t talk too much. Go and read.”

He obeyed. Too well.

Weeks passed. She asked, “How was school?” He said, “Fine.” She asked, “Anything fun today?” He shrugged. Dinner became silent. She thought, “Good, at least he’s not disturbing me.”

Years later she found notes in his bag. His fears, his dreams, his pain… all written down, but never spoken to her. The boy who once talked too much now talked to no one at home.

The day she cried wasn’t when he failed a test. It was when he said, “Mummy, it’s okay. I’ll just tell my friends.”
