Report on the Undergraduate Seminar Series Held by the Director of Research, Ahman Pategi University
Date: November 6, 2024
Venue: Ahman Pategi University Hall
On November 6, 2024, Ahman Pategi University hosted a significant seminar targeted at empowering undergraduate students with essential skills for conducting successful academic research and projects with ease. The seminar was organized by the Director of Research, and its primary goal was to provide students with the necessary guidance and resources to ensure a smooth and successful research journey throughout their academic careers.
Opening Ceremony
The event commenced with an opening prayer led by the SRC Chairman, followed by a welcome speech delivered by the Vice Chancellor of Ahman Pategi University, Prof. Kazeem Gbolagade. Prof. Gbolagade was represented by Dr. Abdulrazak, who highlighted that the seminar was the first of its kind in the university's history. Dr. Abdulrazak further assured the attendees/students that the seminar would be a recurring event, with future editions aimed at enhancing students’ perspectives on research, providing them with the tools for success, and ultimately shaping the future of academic research at the institution.
Keynote Speakers
Dr. Segun's Presentation on Undergraduate Research
The first keynote speaker, Dr. Segun, delivered an engaging presentation on the importance of undergraduate research, its benefits, and the opportunities it presents for academic and professional growth. Dr. Segun explained the two core elements of academic research: research (described as systematic investigation) and undergraduate (research carried out by students, primarily to fulfill academic requirements).
He provided an overview of different types of research, including independent research, typically undertaken by final-year students; capstone research, which is more practical in nature; and the importance of research internships (such as SIWES) in providing real-world research experience. Dr. Segun highlighted the numerous benefits of research, including its role in developing critical thinking, fostering innovation, solving complex problems, and building professional skills. He also noted that academic research enhances networking opportunities, allowing students to interact with leading experts in their fields.
Furthermore, he explained that proficiency in research can significantly increase a student's chances of securing a scholarship.
Dr. Segun concluded his speech by advising students to avoid procrastination, stay away from negative influences, and be determined in their academic pursuits. He emphasized the importance of embracing opportunities and trusting in God to unlock their potential for a successful future in research.
Mr. Usman Abiola Mohammed's Presentation on Library and Internet Resources
The second keynote speaker, Mr. Usman Abiola Mohammed (PhD in view), presented on "Beyond the Stacks: Effective Use of Library and Internet Resources for Academic Success." His talk focused on the importance of utilizing library and internet resources effectively to enhance academic research. Mr. Mohammed explored a variety of resource categories, including digital databases, journals, multimedia, and both physical and virtual library access.
He emphasized the need for students to master library catalogs, research databases, and academic search engines like BASE, Google Scholar, and PubMed. Mr. Mohammed also discussed the importance of citation management tools and the role of effective note-taking in research. He encouraged students to take full advantage of online tutorials and collaborative tools such as journals and AI, which can assist in research.
Furthermore, Mr. Mohammed addressed key topics such as data management for computing students, the use of virtual and augmented research tools, and the balancing of digital and traditional resources. He also discussed strategies for overcoming information overload and staying current in one’s academic field. In his conclusion, he humorously wished the students, “May your Wi-Fi be strong and your coffee stronger,” reminding them of the critical importance of accuracy, relevance, and purpose in academic research.
Additional Insights: Citations, References, and the Role of AI
In the later part of the seminar, Mr. Dawud, Mr. Sherif, and another lecturer provided a presentation on citations and references, as well as the effective use of journals and AI in writing research papers. They clarified that while AI can be a helpful guide in the research process, it should not be used to write the entire papers. The speakers emphasized that AI tools are valuable for providing structure and guidance but often lack the accuracy required for in-depth research.
The lecturers also discussed plagiarism, its consequences, and how to avoid it by properly citing sources and referencing materials. Mr. Dawud specifically cautioned students against using AI as a shortcut, advising that true academic success comes from conducting thorough research and producing original work.
Conclusion
The seminar was a resounding success, providing students with invaluable insights into the world of academic research. The keynote speakers, alongside the practical advice offered on utilizing research resources and managing citations, equipped the students with the tools they need to excel in their academic pursuits. With a focus on fostering critical thinking, innovation, and academic integrity, the seminar ensured that students were well-prepared to tackle the challenges of research and emerge successful in their academic careers.
Dr. Abdulrazak, who delivered the VC's affirmed that this seminar would become a regular event, contributing to the ongoing development of students' academic and professional abilities in research.
