THE POLITICAL SYSTEMS

1. Democracy (rule of the people)
Power sits with the citizens. You vote, you choose leaders. In theory, everyone has a voice; in practice, turnout and influence can vary a lot. Nigeria, US, India fall here.

2. Republic (rule through representatives)
A cousin of democracy. People elect representatives who make decisions on their behalf. Most modern โ€œdemocraciesโ€ are actually republics wearing democracy clothes.

3. Monarchy (rule of a king or queen)
Power is inherited, not elected.
Can be:

Absolute monarchy: ruler has full control

Constitutional monarchy: ruler is mostly symbolic (like UK today)

4. Aristocracy (rule by the โ€œnobleโ€ class)
Power held by elites believed to be the โ€œbestโ€ (wealth, birth, status). It sounds classy; history shows it often wasnโ€™t fair.

5. Plutocracy (rule by the rich)
Money talks, everything else walks. Influence comes from wealth. No surprise this one quietly shows up inside many systems.

6. Oligarchy (rule by a small group)
A few powerful people control everything; could be military leaders, business elites, or political insiders.

7. Theocracy (rule by religion)
Religious leaders or religious law guide governance. Iran is a modern example.

8. Dictatorship (rule by one strong leader)
One person holds power, often without meaningful elections. Decisions flow from the top like a single CEO running a country with no board oversight.

9. Autocracy (similar to dictatorship)
Power concentrated in one person or a small inner circle. The term is broader than dictatorship.

10. Meritocracy (rule by the โ€œmost qualifiedโ€)
Leadership based on skill and ability. Sounds perfect on paper; in reality, defining โ€œmeritโ€ gets messy fast.

11. Technocracy (rule by experts)
Engineers, economists, scientists running the show. Efficient idea, but can feel disconnected from everyday people.

12. Anarchy (no formal government)
Not necessarily chaos like movies show. It means absence of centralized authority. In real life, it often struggles to stay stable for long periods.

13. Kleptocracy (rule by thieves, basically)
Leaders use power to steal public wealth. Harsh word, but history has receipts.
