To our students writing the WAEC exam, how has been your exam so far??

Pay attention to these 👇👇 Common Mistakes Students Make During Exams

Examinations are not only a test of intelligence - they are also a test of preparation, discipline, confidence, and strategy.

Many students fail not because they are dull, but because they make avoidable mistakes before and during the exam.

Understanding these mistakes can help you improve your performance and succeed academically.

1. When you are so fearful and anxious

Many students enter the examination hall already defeated in their minds.

Fear causes - confusion, forgetfulness, panic, and loss of concentration.

Some students know the answers while reading at home but become nervous during the exam.

📌What you should do instead:

Prepare well. Avoid negative thinking. Stay calm and confident. Believe in your ability to succeed.

Confidence improves performance.

2.When you don't know how to manage time

Some students spend too much time on one question and later rush the remaining questions.

As a result, important questions are left unanswered, handwriting becomes rough, and mistakes increase.

📌What you should do instead:

Divide your time wisely. Answer easier questions first.Avoid wasting too much time on difficult questions. Always keep an eye on the clock.

Time management is very important during examinations.

3. Failing to read instructions carefully

Some students lose marks simply because they do not follow instructions. For example: answering only one question instead of two, solving the wrong section, or ignoring important directions.

This mistake is very common.

📌What you should do instead:

Before answering; read instructions carefully, understand what is required, and confirm the number of questions to answer.

A few seconds of careful reading can save many marks.

4. Engaging yourself inEl examination malpractice

Some students depend on cheating instead of preparation. Examination malpractice can destroy your reputation, confidence, and future opportunities.

Students who rely on cheating often fail to develop real knowledge.

📌What you should do:

Believe in hard work, prepare honestly, build confidence in your ability.

True success brings peace of mind.

5. When you fail to revise

Some students read new topics repeatedly but fail to revise old ones. Without revision your memory weakens, your understanding reduces, and important points are forgotten.

📌What you should do:

Revise regularly, summarize key points, practice repeatedly, test yourself often.

Revision strengthens understanding.

6. When you are careless in some aspects

It causes many unnecessary mistakes. Like wrong calculations, incorrect spellings, skipping questions, writing wrong question numbers, and forgetting units in Mathematics or Science.

Sometimes students know the answer but lose marks because of carelessness.

📌What you should do:

Work carefully, recheck your answers, avoid rushing unnecessarily.

Little carelessness can reduce excellent performance.

7. Failure to concentrate

Some students allow distractions during exams. They focus on other students, become disturbed by noise, or panic when others submit early.

This affects performance negatively.

📌What you should do:

Focus on your own paper. Ignore distractions.Stay mentally calm throughout the exam.

Concentration improves accuracy and speed.

8. When your handwriting is nothing to read about

Even correct answers may be difficult to mark if handwriting is very poor. Poor presentation can frustrate examiners.

📌What you should do:

Write legibly, arrange your work neatly, number your answers correctly, use proper steps, especially in Mathematics.

Good presentation creates a better impression.

9. When you depend only on cramming

Some students memorize without understanding. When exam questions change slightly, they become confused. Understanding is always better than cramming.

📌What you should do:

Study to understand. Ask questions when confused. Practice different examples before the exam. Learn concepts step by step.

Understanding gives confidence in the examination hall.

10. When you fail to maintain good healthy habits

Some students sleep too little, skip meals, or overstress themselves before examinations.

This affects memory and concentration.

📌What you should do:

Rest properly, eat well, stay healthy, avoid excessive pressure.

A healthy mind learns better.

11. Negative Peer Influence

Some students spend more time discussing fear, gossiping, or engaging in distractions with friends.

Wrong companies affect academic focus.

📌What you should do:

Stay around serious students, disciplined friends, and people who encourage learning.

Good friendships can improve academic success.

In all, examination success is not only about intelligence. It is also about preparation, discipline, confidence, focus, and proper strategy.

You can improve greatly if you avoid these common mistakes.

Every examination is an opportunity to prove hard work and determination. Students who prepare properly, stay disciplined, and believe in themselves will succeed excellently.

WHY STUDENTS FAIL WAEC (PART 9)
What To Do 14 Days Before WAEC Starts --- written by ✍️: Ajani Paul

The last 14 days before WAEC are very important. This period can either improve your performance or expose your lack of preparation. The good news is, with the right actions, you can still make a big difference.

1. CREATE A FOCUSED TIMETABLE.

Plan your day wisely. Give more time to difficult subjects, but don’t ignore the ones you’re already good at.

2. START INTENSIVE REVISION

This is not the time to be learning everything from scratch. Focus on revising topics you have already read.

3. PRACTISE LAST QUESTIONS DAILY

Solve WAEC past questions every day. This helps you understand how questions are set and improves your speed.

4. IDENTIFY YOUR WEAK AREAS

Be honest with yourself. Work more on topics you struggle with instead of avoiding them.

5. STUDY SMART, NOT JUST HARD

Focus on key topics, formulas, and likely questions. Avoid wasting time on irrelevant details.

6. REDUCE DISTRACTIONS

Limit phone use, unnecessary outings, and anything that takes your attention away from your goal.

7. JOIN GROUP DISCUSSION (Wisely)

Study groups can help, but only if they are focused. Avoid groups that turn into gossip sessions.

8. TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEALTH

Eat well, sleep enough, and rest your mind. Don’t fall sick close to your exams.

9. BUILD CONFIDENCE

Remind yourself daily: “I am getting better. I can pass this exam.”

10. PRAY AND STAY POSITIVE

Stay hopeful and focused. Combine effort with faith.

📌Don’t panic — take action.

WHY STUDENTS FAIL WAEC (PART 7)
How Phone Addiction Makes Students Fail WAEC --- written by ✍️: Ajani Paul

Phones are useful, but when not controlled, they become one of the biggest reasons students fail WAEC. It’s not the phone itself, it’s how it is used.

Many students plan to read, but once they pick up their phone “for a few minutes,” it turns into hours on social media, chats, videos, and games. Before they realize it, the whole day is gone with little or no study done.

Another problem is LACK IF CONCENTRATION. Constant notifications make it hard to focus. Even while reading, the mind keeps thinking about messages, trends, or updates. This weakens understanding and memory.

LATE-NIGHT PHONE USE also affects performance. Some students stay up chatting or scrolling and then feel tired during the day. A tired brain cannot learn effectively.

Phone addiction also leads to PROCRASTINATION. Important tasks like reading, revising, and practicing past questions are postponed again and again.

HOW TO CONTROL PHONE DISTRACTION

✍️Set specific times to use your phone

✍️Turn off unnecessary notifications while studying

✍️Keep your phone away when reading

✍️Use your phone for learning (watch educational videos, practice questions)

✍️Sleep early and avoid late-night scrolling

📌Your phone can either help you pass WAEC or contribute to your failure — the choice is yours. Control your phone, or it will control your future.

WHY STUDENTS FAIL WAEC (PART 6)
Common Lies Students Tell Themselves Before Failing WAEC --- written by✍️: Ajani Paul

Many students do not fail WAEC suddenly. Failure often starts with the wrong mindset and excuses they repeat to themselves every day. These lies look harmless, but they destroy preparation little by little.

1. “I Still Have Time.”

This is one of the biggest lies. Days move fast, and before you know it, the exam is near.

2. “I Read Better Under Pressure.”

Some students wait until the last minute, thinking panic will help them read. Most times, it only creates confusion.

3. “Expo Will Help Me.”

Depending on malpractice is risky and can ruin your result. Real confidence comes from preparation.

4. “Math Is Not For Me.”

No subject belongs to special people. Improvement comes through practice.

5. “One Day of Reading Is Enough.”

Success in WAEC comes from consistency, not one-night effort.

6. “Others Are Not Reading Too.”

Comparing yourself to careless people can keep you behind. Focus on your own future.

7. “I Can’t Remember Anything.”

Many students say this because of fear. With revision and practice, memory improves.

8. “I’ll Start Next Week.”

Next week becomes next month, and time disappears.

📌The lies you believe today can become the results you regret tomorrow. Replace excuses with action, and replace fear with discipline.
