Drill Stem Inspection: Required standard NDT Practices

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods typically address the theory, methodologies, and general inspection processes associated with castings, forgings, and welds. However, when inspecting Drill Stem Components, additional operational and environmental factors must be considered, including:

• Handling and storage practices
• Well conditions
• Chemical attack and corrosion
• Torsional stresses
• Tensile loading
• Impact damage

A drill string consists of a wide variety of tools—some manufactured as single-piece components and others as complex multi-segment assemblies. As a result, multiple standards and specifications may apply simultaneously, including:

• Industry standards
• Manufacturer requirements
• Vendor-specific procedures
• End-user specifications

Responsibility for compliance begins with a clear understanding between the contracting parties regarding the scope and requirements of inspection services.

The competence of the inspection service provider is critical. Providers must meet or exceed established NDT practices for each component and demonstrate a clear understanding of what to inspect, where to inspect, when inspections are required, and how inspections should be performed. This often requires additional training, experience, and qualification specific to Drill Stem Inspection.

A key element of effective inspection is the ability to accurately identify discontinuities, defects, and their root causes. Such findings can provide valuable feedback that supports program improvements and helps prevent recurring failures.

Ultimately, effective communication between operators, service providers, manufacturers, and other stakeholders is essential to reducing Non-Productive Time (NPT), improving reliability, and ensuring the integrity of the drill string throughout its service life.

Drill Stem Inspection: More Than Standard NDT

While NDT methods cover the theory, methodologies, and inspection processes for castings, forgings, and welds, Drill Stem Components require consideration of additional factors such as handling, storage, environmental exposure, chemical attack, torsion, tension, and impact loading.

A drill string comprises various tools—both single-piece and multi-segment assemblies—often requiring compliance with multiple standards simultaneously, including industry, manufacturer, vendor, and end-user requirements. Ensuring compliance begins with a clear understanding between all parties involved in the inspection contract.

Inspection providers must possess the competence, training, and qualifications necessary to determine what, where, when, and how inspections are performed, meeting or exceeding standard NDT practices specific to drill stem components.

The ability to identify discontinuities, defects, and their root causes is essential, providing valuable insight to prevent recurring failures and improve operational reliability.

Strong communication between all stakeholders remains key to reducing Non-Productive Time (NPT) and maintaining drill string integrity.

AUSTRALIA 2023 **Conducting Drill Stem Level II Training & Qualification**

In line with industry standards such as DS-1 Volume 3 and API RP 7G-2, this training program develops personnel competency in Drill Stem inspection and evaluation.
These standards cover a wide range of Drill Stem components, requiring inspectors to be multi-disciplined and proficient in multiple inspection techniques to effectively perform their responsibilities.

**Course modules include:**
✔ Electromagnetic Inspection (EMI)
✔ Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
✔ Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)
✔ Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
✔ Visual Inspection (VT)
✔ Dimensional Inspection (DT)

Both theoretical and practical training are provided, as applicable.

As service providers are ultimately responsible for the work performed by their personnel, a thorough understanding of Drill Stem components, product technology, operating environments, and service-induced stresses is essential for accurately assessing component condition and ensuring fitness for continued service.

Throwback to TUBEX, in Romania on 2010.

Conducted multiple Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) training programs focused on Drill Stem components, covering Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), and Ultrasonic Testing (UT) in preparation for Level II qualification in each respective method.

The training combined product and process technology awareness — from raw material and manufacturing processes through to finished component applications — with detailed instruction on NDT principles, inspection techniques, acceptance criteria, discontinuity interpretation, and applicable industry codes and standards.

Participants underwent continual competency assessments, practical evaluations, and final examinations designed to validate technical proficiency and inspection capability for critical components utilized within the oil & gas and heavy engineering sectors.

Throwback to Tianhe, China on 2006.

Performed mill surveillance and source inspection activities for the manufacture of Drill Stem Stabilizers, with verification of raw material traceability, forging/forming operations, heat treatment processes, mechanical testing, machining and component finishing, dimensional and visual inspection, marking, preservation, and final packaging prior to shipment release. Scope of audit also included assessment of the documented Quality Management System for compliance with applicable client specifications, internal procedures, and relevant industry standards.
