CALABARZON Clinches Quarterfinals Berth After 73-65 Win Over CARAA

Agusan del Sur — Loud chants of “Duterte! Duterte!” echoed inside the EOC Arena as Daerick Duterte once again delivered a dominant performance to power the CALABARZON Heroes past CARAA, 73-65, on Wednesday in the Palarong Pambansa 2026.

The pride of Angono, Rizal finished with a double-double performance of 22 points and 10 rebounds, leading CALABARZON to its second straight victory and an outright quarterfinals berth.

Represented by Saint John’s Wort Integrated School of Antipolo, CALABARZON improved to 2-0, making them the only undefeated team in Bracket D and officially securing the No. 1 seed regardless of the outcome of their final elimination game against SOCSARGEN.

The Heroes showed composure in the second half as Duterte took over offensively while anchoring the team’s defense and rebounding.

Meanwhile, Ateneo de Cebu and CARAA are now headed to a do-or-die battle for the final playoff spot in Bracket D.

Joining CALABARZON among the tournament’s unbeaten squads are the Davao Eagles (3-0), Western Visayas (2-0), and NCR (3-0).

With momentum on their side, the CALABARZON Heroes now shift their focus to the quarterfinals as they continue their strong campaign in Agusan del Sur.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐲 officially opens its newest branch in Meycauayan City, Bulacan, marking its 5th branch in the province as the academy continues its commitment to developing more point guards and future leaders through basketball.

The new branch will officially open on 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟎𝟔, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 and will hold its training sessions every weekend only to make sure student-athletes can continue training without disturbing their studies.

The academy also expressed its gratitude to its venue partner, 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞 of Meycauayan Bulacan, for supporting the grassroots basketball program in the city.

Known nationwide for its grassroots basketball development program, The Point Guard Academy focuses not only on basketball skills, but also on discipline, leadership, teamwork, confidence, and character development among young athletes.

CALABARZON EARNS FIRST PALARO WIN, BEATS CENTRAL VISAYAS 95-86

AGUSAN DEL SUR — The CALABARZON Region captured its first victory in the ongoing Palarong Pambansa after defeating Central Visayas, 96-86, in a thrilling basketball matchup.

Represented by Saint John’s Wort Integrated School, CALABARZON overcame a tough challenge from Central Visayas, represented by SHS-Ateneo de Cebu, in a game that stayed close through the first two quarters.

Both teams traded baskets in an intense opening half, finishing tied at 52-52 heading into the break.

CALABARZON eventually pulled away in the second half behind the all-around brilliance of Daerick Duterte, who delivered a near triple-double performance with 26 points, 15 rebounds, and 9 assists.

Duterte took control in the 3rd and 4th quarters, providing crucial baskets, playmaking, and leadership as the Heroes created separation late in the game.

With strong ex*****on on both ends of the floor, CALABARZON secured the important win and gained momentum moving forward in the national tournament.

For many people, coaching starts with passion. But for Coach Ricky Longares, passion alone is not enough.

In 2-3 years, Coach Ricky has conducted 24 successful batches of the The Point Guard Academy Coaches Clinic, helping aspiring and active coaches develop not only their basketball knowledge, but also the mindset, discipline, leadership, and communication skills needed to properly mentor young athletes.

The program was created for:

✅ Coaches who want to start coaching but don’t know where to begin
✅ Active coaches who want to improve their system and leadership
✅ Team handlers who want to build more competitive and winning programs
✅ Former players who want to transition into coaching

Also Ideal for teacher s assigned to Coach their team to compete for DepEd Meet.

Today, many graduates of the TPGA Coaches Clinic are now successfully coaching in schools, handling their own basketball camps, and competing in major leagues such as MILCU, Junior MPBL, Batang PBA, and even international competitions.

Some started as Assistant Coaches inside TPGA and eventually became Head Coaches and Camp Directors of different branches nationwide.

Through this movement, TPGA has now expanded to 40 active camps across the Philippines, including Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

But according to Coach Ricky, basketball knowledge is only part of the training.

“Madami nang magagaling na coach bago pa mag-training sa TPGA Coaches Clinic. Minsan confidence lang talaga ang kulang. Ang gusto naming maipasa ay paano humawak ng bata, paano sila tratuhin nang tama, at paano gamitin ang basketball para makatulong sa paghubog ng mabubuting tao.”

Beyond winning championships, the clinic focuses heavily on grassroots coaching principles, child development, discipline, values formation, and leadership — areas often overlooked in traditional coaching seminars.

To further help coaches build credibility and confidence, Coach Ricky also organized SBP Coaches Accreditation programs to help coaches acquire official SBP accreditation.

This upcoming batch is expected to gather aspiring and experienced coaches from different cities and municipalities who want to learn, grow, and become better mentors for the next generation of athletes.
