As prices continue to rise and transport costs increase across the Cordillera, many farmers are forced to discard surplus harvests while families struggle with high food costs. This growing challenge calls for practical, sustainable solutions that can benefit both producers and consumers.
In response, the Upnorth Business Club, in partnership with Badbado Benguet, Ko B**g Kimchi, Acaden, and JCI Baguio, launched the โSurplus to Sustainabilityโ Workshop at Happy Hallow Barangay Hall. The community-driven initiative gathered over 30 participants, equipping them with valuable skills in food preservation and livelihood development.
The workshop featured expert-led demonstrations from Sir Simon of Ko B**g Kimchi and Maโam Meli Eun Hye of Badbado Benguet, who shared their knowledge on authentic kimchi-making and advanced preservation techniques using locally available resources. Participants were given hands-on experience, allowing them to transform excess produce into sustainable food products.
Beyond technical skills, Chef Den Abad of Acaden Skills and Business Academy provided training on how these practices can be turned into profitable home-based businesses. The session emphasized entrepreneurship, encouraging participants to explore income-generating opportunities while contributing to food sustainability.
At its core, the program aims to ensure that no crop goes to waste and that every household has a pathway toward financial resilience. By maximizing local harvests and reducing food waste, communities can strengthen both their food security and economic stability.
This milestone initiative was championed by UNBC Founder Maโam Jeannine Chan, Owner of Mountain Lodge and Restaurant, and Upnorth Business Club President Nathan Barroga of Newtown Plaza Hotel and ACHIEVE Institute. In coordination with Barangay Happy Hallow, led by Sir Dan Dangatan, and in remembrance of the late Esperanza Damian-Ananayo, the event stands as a testament to the power of collaboration.
Through collective effort and shared knowledge, the community is not only addressing todayโs challenges but also building a more sustainable and empowered future, proving that with the right skills and support, we can turn surplus into opportunity. ๐พ

The current oil crisis is hitting everyone hard. Itโs driving up transportation costs, which means higher prices at the grocery store for households, and increased financial strain on our vital local farmers.
Letโs take control and build community resilience together! ๐ช
We invite you to a crucial workshop: Surplus to Sustainability: A Food Preservation Workshop.
Presented by UNBC Up North Business Club and proudly supported by our partners: Badbado Benguet, Ko B**g Kimchi, and JCI Baguio.
This workshop aims to empower you to:
โ
Beat Inflation: Learn essential skills like canning, pickling, and fermenting to extend the shelf life of your food.
โ
Support Local Farmers: Buying in bulk during seasonal gluts helps farmers manage surplus, and preservation allows you to enjoy their produce year-round, regardless of market volatility.
โ
Reduce Waste: Don't pay more tomorrow for what you can preserve today! Turn potential food waste into delicious, shelf-stable meals.
This is a vital opportunity to gain self-reliance skills for a more sustainable future for your family and your community.
